Something for Mom

Flowers, jewelry, spa packages, and arts and crafts.
Those are just a few of the gifts that Kings County residents plan on giving their mothers this weekend.
But for those who waited until the last minute, there's still time to make Mother's Day special.
Local retailers - and a few children - offered The Sentinel some last-minute gift ideas this week that are sure to please any mother.
Among top ideas is a spa day for mom. And that's just what one Hanford hairstylist plans to do.Panache hairstylist Debbie Jeffries said she and her siblings plan to purchase a pedicure, manicure and facial spa package for their mom.
"She's not into massages," Jeffries said. "Those are services where she can relax and feel comfortable."
Ashly Sagariballa, an attendant at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino's spa, said that a "serenity package" is a popular Mother's Day gift. For $210, it includes four services: an hourlong massage, a facial, a manicure and a pedicure.
Sagariballa said with the package, mothers can book it whenever they like.
Plaza Day Spa in Lemoore said its most popular package bought for Mother's Day is the spa pedicure and manicure, which costs $70 and includes an hour and 45 minutes of pampering.
For those who like giving flowers, there's still time to get the order in and have it ready by Mother's Day.
Paul Rhoades, owner of Gonsalves-Fasso Flowers, on East Grangeville Boulevard near 10th Avenue, said the shop will still be taking Mother's Day orders today, which can be picked up later in the day or on Sunday. The florist will be open on Sunday for walk-ins and pick-ups from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday was the last day for customers to place an order for delivery.
Rhoades said altogether they will complete 1,000 deliveries by the end of this week.
Floral designer Jill Cabrera, of An Enchanted Florist, located in the Super-Way Shopping Center on North 10th Avenue, said the busiest days for Mother's Day are typically Thursday, Friday and today.
She said people who order flowers today can still have flowers delivered locally the same day. However, they will be closed on Sunday.
Cabrera said their most popular items are floral arrangements of spring flowers, which start at $35.
For mothers who love jewelry, two downtown Hanford jewelers say personalized jewelry is also a hot gift for Mother's Day.
Bridget Neves, owner of Candice & Co., a jeweler in downtown Hanford, said they've had a lot of people buying "Mother's rings," which feature children's birthstones.
Neves said the rings run anywhere from $200 to $2,000, depending on the featured birthstones.
Judy Crawford of Miller's Jewelry, also in downtown Hanford, said they recently sold a yellow gold custom-made necklace that includes seven birthstones for all the children as a Mother's Day gift.
And for mothers who like arts and crafts, Color Me Mine is another alternative for gift ideas.
Third-grader Selina Mata, 9, spent her Wednesday afternoon at the Hanford store on North 12th Avenuedesigning a painted bisque coffee mug with a heart on it for her grandmother.
"It's a heart, but it got a little messed up," Selina said, pointing to the gray heart painted on her mug. "I know she's going to like it and be surprised."
Color Me Mine will offer a Mother's Day brunch from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
The Mother's Day brunch will include a continental breakfast, goody bag and customers can paint one pottery piece for $20.
However, the pottery pieces won't be ready for five days because they will need to be glazed and then fired in a kiln. Those interested in participating should call to pre-register, 587-2738.
On a tight budget?
The Kings County Art League will hold an art show in the Hanford Civic Center Park from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Art will be hung in the park and juried onsite. There is no cost to attend the art show. Artist and food booths will be on scene.
The Kiwanis Club will offer a Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast at the Civic Auditorium from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday. Cost is $5.
The annual Street Faire will be held on Mother's Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Eighth Street, between Douty and Harris streets. Antiques from all over California will be on display and available for purchase. A special garden area will be open to the public. There will be live music as well. Admission is free.
