Lemoore coach sentenced to five years in prison for sexual assault against minor

Daniel Flores, a former Lemoore Little League coach, was sentenced to five years in state prison late this morning for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Flores, 42, had pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a 2004 incident at his daughter's birthday party. One of the guests alleged that despite her protests, Flores had sex with her while she was too intoxicated to resist.

According to court records, Flores and his wife provided alcohol to the teens, one of whom became so drunk that she opted to spend the night.

Flores resigned from his coaching position shortly after his no-contest plea this past March.

He had passed a Little League background check in January because he had no convictions or pleas on his record.

Little League officials say that if someone had told them about the charges against Flores earlier, board members would have looked into the matter and likely asked Flores to resign immediately.

League officials say they took immediate action to force Flores to resign after another league coach informed them of the charges against him.

Officials say they are looking into additional screening measures for coaches. They may utilize the fingerprint system schools currently use.

The victim, now 18, recently filed a civil lawsuit in the case.

" The coach provided alcohol to a 15 year old, got her drunk and then raped her - but Ron Calhoun did a sweet deal to sexual assault instead of rape. "

" What a slap on the hand this jerked walked away with. that law for cases like this should be stiffer so that men & Women will think twice befor doing such a terrible acton another person this is why we have a lot of predetors because they get off so easy not long enough time is being served. i wonder if his wife will stand by his side? i would advise her to get rid of that no good for nothing right away "

" Since when is 5 years in PRISON a sweet deal for a 1st offense!? Are you stupid? Or Do you just hate Calhoun? "

" Thank God this predator / child molester is going to prison - that's one less pervert stalking our children. I know his prison-mates will not hesitate expressing their opinion . . . . I hope the victim / survivor can put this horrible event behind her now, and start a beautiful new chapter of her life. "

" Where was the innocent wife? Don't even try to tell me that a party with alcohol provided to minors with both parents "SUPERVISING" and he had sex with a girl......where in the heck was his wife and why wasn't she charged as well????? He is truly a "BAD" person, but the wife is not an innocent little angel!!!! I demand Equal Justice. "

To what A wrote on May 21, 2007 9:30 PM:

" Did you ever think that maybe a plea bargain was accepted because the victim did not want to testify in this case. Testifying would cause the victim more public pain. You might want to think before you write..... "

About the wife wrote on May 21, 2007 10:20 PM:

" If you ask me, the wife should be held responsible also. She had the ability to not provide alcohol to minors in her home. She should be held as an acomplis. Best of luck to the victim. Parents we need to be yet even more involved with where our children are even if they are with someone we SHOULD be able trust. "

" If it was so bad then why wait 3 years to do anything about it???? Makes you wonder... And a civil suit, sounds like someone wants some money. "

PROUD LLL DAD wrote on May 26, 2007 9:13 PM:

" As a proud parent of a LLL player, I appreciate the many comments posted here. I hope that each opinion, positive or negative, comes from that place that only parents have... where the safety and well being of your child comes before all else. I have read the articles in the Sentinel, watched the news reports from KMPH, and I have also been to the open forum meeting held at the Civic on May 6th. To those of you who believe the board of the LLL failed our kids 3 years ago when they knew of, and failed to act on, a serious accusation and criminal charge, I agree. Now, who are these people that made up the board? How many of them were members of the board this year? Of those, how many knew? I believe that number that we got from the open forum meeting was three. Of the three that were on the board, one (a very good one) resigned. There were two remaining, one of them I know is still on the board, and the other I am not certain. "

PROUD LLL DAD wrote on May 26, 2007 9:15 PM:

" continued There was a comment at the forum made by one of the two remaining that he would resign, but I can’t say if it has happened. The remaining members are working hard to make certain that the trust we have placed in them, to “fix” this problem so that it may never happen again, and get thru this year. Remaining board members are working hard to get the word out to the families in Lemoore and surrounding areas that they are taking this issue seriously, and that they appreciate all the positive feedback, and that they welcome constructive criticism that allows for healthy dialog and positive changes. Unfortunately, the board doesn’t have the same outreach that the Sentinel or KMPH news does. They only have their own website, posters at the ball park, and word of mouth to share the good things that are being done, and the invitations for open forum meetings. "

PROUD LLL DAD wrote on May 26, 2007 9:18 PM:

" continued Neither KMPH nor the Sentinel accepted the offer to come to the meeting on May 6th, but were quick to defend themselves when the board asked for equal opportunity to respond and wrote a very informative piece recently on the Editorial page. The “Editor” had to make certain that he or she had the last word, with a small “disclaimer” type paragraph, basically saying that it stood by their reporter, who by-the-way not only refused the invitation, but explained to a board member by phone, that she would not be able to come to the meeting because her boss would not approve her working on a Sunday. I guess I didn’t realize that NEWS only happened Monday thru Saturday. "

PROUD LLL DAD wrote on May 26, 2007 9:19 PM:

" continued If the very unfortunate events that led to this discussion can do anything to promote a sense of ownership and involvement, and if parents become better acquainted with their child coaches or teachers, then some good will come from the bad. If parent attendance and participation increases at their child’s practices as well as their games and events, then I believe some good will come from the bad. If you have not been to your child’s practice or lessons lately, then go and get to know the adults who you leave your child with for up to several hours a day, many times a week. Do not settle for knowing the adults as “coach.” And in closing, if you have anything else to say about the LLL Board, then join me at their next meeting on June 3rd at 2pm. If the “boss” of the reporter reads this, maybe you could let her work that day, and she could come by the meeting and report the information directly, just a thought. "

Concerned wrote on May 27, 2007 9:25 PM:

" Doing a intensive background check on future little league coaches is not going to make a big difference. This guy went thru a background investigation and it did not stop him from offending. Just because somebody has not a criminal history does not mean he is clean it means he has not been caught. How many times has this guy done such crimes and not get caught.? Where was the wife during this ordeal? do we do a background investigation on all the coaches spouses? "

Jeanette wrote on May 28, 2007 9:54 AM:

" I think it is ridiculous the story's you ran about Danny Flores. One day it was RAPE, one day is was inapproiate touching.....whatever, get your story's straight. These are peoples lives you are affecting. That girl is known to be very premiscious. She has tried to ruin theFlores family, thank GOD they are very strong and decent people.Your reporters got the story all wrong. "

Dumb Jeanette wrote on May 29, 2007 8:37 AM:

" I must say that reading all these comments the one that suprised me the most is what jeanette said. First let me start with it does not matter if the girl was premiscious. Any adult man should know better than to have sex with a minor. No one gets asked to be raped. Me being a parent i would be very upset if i found out that my daughter went to a birthday party and both of her parents provided alchol to my child i would raise hell. I feel sorry for the girl and her family not for the Flores's. There is a reason why there is a law for underage drinking! "

ex-LLL mom wrote on May 31, 2007 11:36 AM:

" I'm glad to see that someone (dumb jeanette) remembers that there is a true victim here. Daniel Flores and the Lemoore Little League are NOT the victim. No matter who she is or what she does, she is the VICTIM. I feel for her and her family, just as I feel for the children of Daniel and Amanda Flores. You may notice that I do not refer to Daniel and Amanda Flores as Mr. & Mrs., those titles are reserved for people of respect. "

pmak wrote on Jun 2, 2007 9:52 AM:

" I can't believe there is someone left in 2007 that blames the victim for a crime. The Flores family can't be decent people, because decent people do not give alcohol to minors. Decent people do not rape children. The girl was 15! The man should be in prison for life, and the wife should be in prison for being an accessory to a crime. If we don't crack down on sexual predators of children this problem will never go away. "

Yuck wrote on Jun 5, 2007 7:22 PM:

" Jeanette, you get no respect here if you don't know how to pluralize 'story' to 'stories' and can't spell promiscuous. Even besides your horrible spelling and grammar capabilities, your opinion is ridiculous. The Flores' lives are not affected by our garble here. The courts affected their lives and that's the end of it. A grown, married man has NO business giving alcohol to a minor or getting in her pants. No way, no day! "

To ex prisoner wrote on Jun 7, 2007 12:54 AM:

" Did you not see what the first offense was? ARE YOU STUPID? Or are you a sex predator yourself? I myself have been in the system, sad to say. I think that they should give harsher punishment to sex offenders. But that sweet deal he received will not be so sweet after all. The years that he does will not be a walk in the park. The inmates will catch wind of this and make his life miserable,he will have to walk with his head always turning back. What a slap on the hand someone wrote,he'll get a slap but it won't be on the hand!!! So don't think he got off easy because those years are going to be HARD!!! SEX OFFENDERS GET NO LOVE IN THE SYSTEM!!!THEY JUST GET WHAT THEY GIVE TO OTHERS. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. LET US ALL LEARN FROM THIS!!!!!! "
