My Corner: I need to go to New York

Can I go to New York? Aw, come on ... can I, huh, can I ... please ... pretty please? With sugar on top??

I mean, I learn something every day here about how to put out a newspaper, spelling big words and the care and feeding of photographers, but can I really learn much more here?

Naah, if I'm really going to learn good stuff, I need to go to New York.

I think it's important to observe how a Broadway play is reviewed. We don't review our local plays and this could be a growth area for us, so why not go to a place where it's done all the time? And of course I'll share the techniques I pick up with the gang over in features.

This may require orchestra seats and a cocktail or two between acts ... just so you'll know.

I also think it's important to observe how a Yankees game is covered ... OK, I could study the Fresno Grizzlies or the Visalia Oaks, but I've been to Chukchansi Park (of course, that was back when it was Grizzlies Stadium) and Recreation Park already. Besides, it freaks me out hearing Doug Greenwald broadcast the Grizzlies' games after listening to his dad describe the Giants all those years. And, hey, I can pass along the information to the sports guys.

This may require seats behind home plate and a hot dog or two ... just so you'll know.

There's lots of other things I think I can learn about there as well ... how the New York papers cover cleaning the Statue of Liberty, how things are going at ground zero, are the instruments in tune in Greenwich Village and really important investigative issues like, is the Bronx really up? Is the Battery really down? And why are those people going through a hole in the ground?

This may require a subway token or two ... just so you'll know. You can't ask those questions just anywhere. I've got to be a part of it, in a city that doesn't sleep.

Speaking of sleeping ... I figure about $300 a night would be right, just by checking a few travel sites online. $447 a night? That's a bit much, don't you think? And, yeah, I could stay outside of the city's core ... but you've got to be at the center of things, after all, it is the Big Apple.

Speaking of food ... not counting those expenses already mentioned, I figure about $100 a day.

On my pay, I'm used to ordering something not on the dollar menu to be a gourmet treat and wouldn't dream of buying lavish meals on someone else's dime ... and the tips couldn't be that much, could they?

So what do you say, oh bosses of bosses? Pleeeeeeeze?

I can't? You say I have responsibilities here and they come first? And you can probably find a way to learn the same stuff much cheaper, without leaving California?

Oh, well, I tried.

" Yes, you should go! Sign up for a TC training seminar. Show us how inexpensively it can be done. But more importantly, see for yourself whether TC training is world class. Document your entire experience in a week long series for all your readers. Now that you've said it, we'll all know that you are just blowing smoke and pretending to be investigative reporters if you don't go. " Maybe you should go to New York for some advanced training in reporting. Maybe then we could get some mature, responsible coverage of the newsworthy events in our commumity. "

" High Five! Read the article a couple of times! If it weren't so sad, it would be humerous! Status Quo will continue unless the Elected Board has the guts to change it. We can only pray that they along with the New Superintendent will stop the frivolous spending. I would love to see in depth articles that discribe the benefits of the HESD trips to New York. "

" I was in an office and overheard a couple of teachers talking about the New York trip. One asked the other if he was going. He said no. That he wasn't one of the chosen ones. He put over twenty years in. Why wouldn't he have that chance as the newbies? "

" You may get your trip yet. Joy Gabler is in the finals for the superintendant job. Big surprise. She is totally on board with Teachers College so there will be many more trips and much more money thrown down the same sink hole. When will they be held accountable for the results of the failed TC program? When will the Sentinel ask for an accounting of the teachers with students on grade level? It's a shame this will continue. "

" Now, if you go to New York, and you should start reporting on things such as the washing of the Statue of Liberty, then you are just going to let it all go to your head and want to go and do somthing dumb - like want to go to cover the ground hog appearance of PunxsutawneyPhil and then they would have to send you to Pennsylvania, and this would just ruin you more so that you may get some wierd idea that Hanford actually wants on somthing that important to read in the morning, then you would be having to go traveling any time there was for instance, a Presidental election to cover and the paper would spend all its money feeding you on the 99 cent value meals at Wendys in Washington, which would eventually lead them to lose all their money for black ink and paper and in the end the paper would have to fold all because you wanting to go see New York. (and that is just one example of what could happen) Any more bright ideas? "

" Whoever gets the supt. job will seemingly have to be approved by the Board, and if the Board is brainwashed to believe TC is wonderful, their candidate will have to act like it's wonderful too, to have a chance. In actuality it usually all comes down to what Darth recommends anyway. If she wants Joy, it will be Joy. The others are just for show. The Board will say they want 4 or 5 candidates, so Darth brings them 4 or 5 warm bodies, but she knows who it will be hours beforehand. "

to Sam wrote on Jun 5, 2007 8:10 AM:

" Yeah, Darth will know who it is before the board sees the 4-5 warm bodies. HESD is no different than City Council because, afterall, no one wants to be surprised or embarrassed. Let's make sure everyone looks not only prepared and knowledgable but the board will seem so much more unified, even tho they may dislike one another a lot. "
