Vote on annexation may affect nursery

A local nursery says a proposed annexation would restrict its rights to do business and grow in the future.

The annexation, if approved tonight, would turn the area into an office area, putting the business out of conformance to the land use.

But city officials say a city ordinance does allow the nursery to stay in business and even grow on a limited scale -- with special permits and some additional cost.

These offers aren't good enough for Hofmans Nursery.

The 46-year-old business at Lacey Boulevard and 12-1/2 Avenue still wants a commercial zoning, as opposed to an office zoning for the area requested by a developer.

The controversial 200-acre annexation proposal for the area behind Target would again head the agenda for tonight's Hanford City Council meeting.

The decision has been postponed since June 19 because of this rare yet awkward zoning conflict involving the small local business.

Southern California developer Daniel Bailey wants to build out the area west of Target and Wal-Mart with houses, apartments and offices and seeks land designations for residential and office uses.

Local environmental advocates are opposing the project for a different reason.

Robin Mattos of the Hanford Environmental Awareness Team asks the city to protect what she says is a remnant of Mussel Slough, a waterway that used to connect Kings River and Tulare Lake.

Its name has a historical significance because of the bloody conflict in 1880 between settlers and the railroad that led to the birth of California's law allowing the governor's recall by voters.

In other business, the city council will introduce an amendment to an ordinance to prohibit parking on Ninth Avenue for the Monday flea market.

A study session has been canceled for this week.

The Hanford City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. every first and third Tuesday in Council Chambers, Civic Auditorium, 400 N. Douty St.

The reporter can be reached at 582-0471, ext. 3059.

" This irritates me to no end. "Hanford City Council, stand up for Bill Hoffman because it's the right thing to do." I realize this is all in vain. "

" Hoffmans was here first. Why should they pay any fees, they have been there for years. WE have seen the family grow up and seen tragedy stuck, we all need to stand up for this business...no fees, no legal battles. They deserve to be here before any more houses!! hanford citizens it is time to stop this madness...City Council you better do right or recall we will go! "

" I agree with humbug. Enough already. Leave them alone. This is all about GREED. Everyone complains about air quality, yet we continue to allow valuable farm land and plant life which aids good air quality with yet more buildings, concrete and asphalt. More cars, and more and more with poor exhaust control on their autos. No small local business has a right to anything, as well as any individual, as imminent domain takes on more and more definitions. All you see in these big box stores is more and more rude, indifferent people who push you aside to get where they want to be or worse yet stand there blocking the isles. Where or where has good old Hanford gone. It isn't forgotten, but it is gone. "

" Do the right thing! Let small business expand if they wish, do not continue to cater to the developers. "

" A simple solution, benefiting all, would be to zone Hoffmans Nursery to a C zone. No harm, no foul. Plus, Hoffmans pay sales taxes and offices do not! It would take all the present offices downtown, plus years of new ones to fill the area to be zoned O. "

" To: Growth Whom would you suggest to replace "recalled" council members? "

To WOW wrote on Jul 18, 2007 9:06 AM:

" I agree with humbug2 and other this is all about greed. Our city council just rezoned nearly 20 acres of property to the east of Hoffman's from Office "0" to Planned Commericial "PC" to make way for yet another Big Box store. If we could not fill the property we had zoned for office with development after 5 years, why do we need more? Could it be that the Hanford City Council and city staff think that by zoning for an Office development that the annexation will generate less public anger? If this zoning is allowed watch how long it takes the property owner (developer) to ask the council to change the zoning to something easier to sell (ie big box store). As to the comment from wow on who will replace the current city council, I have a question of my own. Could anybody else do a worse job than the current coucil? "

To Wow wrote on Jul 18, 2007 1:49 PM:

" That is a good question, who could replace the CC, the problem is once they get in office every thing changes. Real people in the spot light have a hard time making decisions when they are the lone voter. Everyone wants to be in the in crowd. Is there anyone out there who could step up and protect Hanford? I don't mind big business, I mind the little man who gets run over by politics and no more fast food, enough. We also have enough houses that are empty, why more? "

" I agree with the blogs. Maybe one of you bloggers should run for City Council "

solejo wrote on Jul 19, 2007 6:46 PM:

" I agree....the Hofman family should not have to pay any fees or for any legal battles. They are decent law-abiding people who have had a respectable business for many years and they don't deserve this hassle. Surely there is some way to do what you want to do and leave this family alone! "

wow wrote on Jul 25, 2007 10:40 PM:

" Thinking about the developer calling in at the "last minute" and asking for a delay was very clever. Apparently, his "ears" on the ground let him know the extent of the opposition and he did the smart thing. Delay! The more you delay the fewer people will show until only a few remain. The decision then can be made without a lot of fanfare. Council members don't get hodwinked on this one! Give Hoffmans their commercial zone and lets move on! "
