Dave Hawk hearing delayed again

Dave Hawk's pre-trial hearing was delayed again Wednesday.

In June, Hawk -- who is the prime suspect in the disapperance of his ex-wife, Debbie Hawk -- was arrested and charged with felony tax evasion, embezzlement, grand theft, and perjury. He was also charged with one misdemeanor count of possession of chlid pornography.

He has not been charged with his ex-wife's murder.

Two and a half weeks after his initial arrest, Hawk obtained a new attorney, delaying the hearing which would have taken place. This time, proceedings were delayed because Hawk's new attorney was reportedly unable to appear in court.

Flanked by his former attorney Randy Edwards, Hawk, who is free on bond, arrived at the courthouse wearing a perfectly pressed light gray suit.

His lips were slightly upturned in a half-smile as he filed past several news crews waiting for him on his way into a nearby conference room.

Just before whisking his client away into the conference room, Edwards tersely told reporters, "We have no comment," and quickly shut the door behind himself.

The charges against Hawk came about as a result of the investigation into the disappearance of his ex-wife, Debbie Hawk, and her presumed homicide.

Shortly before Debbie Hawk's disappearance last year, the couple was embroiled in a custody and child support dispute. In October, police named Dave Hawk as the prime suspect in the case.

During the course of their investigation, police seized Hawk's computer, where they said they uncovered financial documents and pornographic photos depicting children.

Dave Hawk allegedly misappropriated more than $50,000 from each of his three children's trust funds, used false documents to obtain a loan, and lied about his income on court documents related to the child custody and support dispute.

It is unknown who Hawk's new attorney is, or the reason he or she could not be present in court Wednesday. Neither Hawk nor Edwards have offered an explanation as to why Hawk is changing attorneys.

However, it is known that Edwards is an attorney with the law firm of Griswold, LaSalle, Cobb, Dowd and Gin, where Hanford City Attorney Bob Dowd is a partner.

As the city attorney, Dowd also represents Hanford's police department -- the same agency which is investigating Hawk both in this case and in the Debbie Hawk case.

The reporter can be reached at 582-0471, ext. 3062.

" I am begging the editor of this paper who is charged with leading the writers that this smear tactic writting has gone on too long. The last few statements in the story is trying to lead readers to believe there is some conspiracy within the Dowd offices that is undermining this whole story. You don't have to make these statements to report the news. Simply state that Hawk got a new attorney who could not make it and a few recap facts about what happened. It is sad that there are people out there like this. I remember reading the paper even as a kid, and this type of story was never in there. Stories like this are found in the letter to editor or commentary pages. This makes me sad that there are educated people out there trying to make a dollar at the expese of others. To the editor: TAKE THE HIGH ROAD.....it always leads to good things, and at this moment you are headed for the dirt! "

" Everyone knew it was going to be delayed again. With OUR taxpayer money. Now we have a alledged murderer/pedophile on the streets again. Just stop playing the game Dave, face the charges and be a man. "

" The last delay was because Judge Steven Barnes had a conflict?? What conflict was never clear, and we the tax payer pay up again. "

" I agree with "Hanford Sentinel Plese". The Sentinel should report the news and knock off the what the rumor is. Those last two paragraphs were unprofessional. As far as the cost goes, credit the State of California and the ALCU and the tax dollars are the price you pay for living in California. I just want justice and don't want a rush to judgement. I don't know Dave hawk, but at this point he is innocent until proven guilty. "

" Great recap, HANFORD SENTINEL, into the complexities and nuances in this very obvious case! I now cannot be a part of the jury pool because the local media has poisoned my objectiveness! ...and the great American witch hunt continues... "

I know, I know. It’s been a long time. But I’m back on the blogs again and thanks to my coverage of education I’ve got something to say in light of tomorrow’s holiday. Faith in the ruins

I interviewed an 85-year-old woman on Monday. I will surely never hear “young man” as much as I did for the hour I talked with Merry Loo. “Young man,” she said. “Go out there and find a wife.” Go out and find a wife. Procreate. Buy a house. Be civic minded. Treat people with fairness, honesty and [...]

Fearful Football Forecast: Week 12

Are some of these leagues getting so predictable that even I can predict them right? I was just doing last week’s totals and can’t believe I again nailed just about all of them. The one miss, the Cowboys, of course. I generally haven’t fared well in these things at other papers, seriously! 13-1 again, now [...]

The poison of ideology

Ideology is often the bane of this blog. I say this at the risk of alienating some of the most frequent commentators. But it needs to be said: Ideology is one of the great poisons of the modern age, remnants of which survive into the postmodern world we now live in. For evidence, just read some of the [...]
