Babe Ruth Regionals

HANFORD -- The Hanford Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Stars did not have too much trouble staying alive in the Pacific Southwest Regionals on Friday.

Erik Casida helped make sure of that, driving in eight runs in Hanford's 15-0 victory over Guam.

Hanford erupted for 17 hits to advance in loser's bracket play and will take on Mesquite, Nev., this morning at 10 a.m. at Tokumoto Field.

If Hanford wins, it will play again tonight at 7 p.m. against either Manteca or Yuma, Ariz.

Casida connected for a grand-slam homer in the second inning and then a three-run homer in the third. He also had an RBI single.

Guam was held in check by the stellar pitching of Michael Chavez. He pitched four innings with eight strikeouts and had a perfect game broken up with two outs in the fourth inning when Kyle Arce reached on a strikeout and wild pitch.

Kyle Verdegaal pitched the fifth for Hanford. He also provided some punch at the plate with a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Hanford's Josh Banuelos was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and two RBIs. Chavez was 3-for-4.

Guam's only hit came on a one-out, fifth inning single by Roman Seman.

In other games Friday:

Hawaii gained control with a four-run third inning to advance in winner's bracket play.

Ryan Yamane went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs as Hawaii moved into a Sunday matchup between the winner of today's Manteca-Yuma game.

Winning pitcher Marcus Yoshii struck out five in 4 2/3 inning. He was relieved by Jeremy Fujimoto after giving up four consecutive hits in the fifth.

Fujimoto yielded a solo home run to Anthony Rosa in the seventh, but no other hits. He struck out five in 2 1/3.

Colton Simms had two hits for South Reno, the Nevada champion.

South Reno will face Torrance today at 1 p.m.

Torrance 3, Tri Valley 1

Michael Suey drove in a pair of runs in the fifth inning and Southern California campion Torrance stayed alive by osuting the Northern California titleholders.

Suey hit a two-run single with two outs to score Joseph DaCosta and Martin Flores to take a 3-0 lead. Earlier in the inning, Flores scored Ivan Dominguez, who walked.

Tri Valley got on the board in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles by Michael Smith and Ryan Fairclough with two outs.

Josh Mingura picked up the win, pitching six strong innings and Suey pitched the seventh.
