Wrong-way driver dies in crash on 198 in Lemoore

The driver of a white Pontiac Grand Prix was killed in a traffic collision Saturday night when the vehicle crashed head-on into a Dodge Nitro while traveling the wrong direction down Highway 198, according to Lemoore Police Cmdr. Jeff Laws.

Witness reports indicate that the Pontiac was seen traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Highway 198, near Highway 41, just prior to the incident.

Officers arrived at the scene just after 11 p.m. and determined that the driver of the Pontiac had been killed on impact.

The two occupants of the Nitro, Rhett Word and Cooper Hatfield of Lemoore Naval Air Station, were transported to Hanford Community Medical Center to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to Lemoore police.

The name of the driver was not released, pending notification of the family.

Lemoore Police are still investigating the collision at this time.

The reporter can be reached at 582-0471, ext. 3048.

" I've heard of this twice before. Cars driving west on the east bound lane on 198. My husband works on base & he's had to pull to the median just to avoid a car driving head on towards him. How in the heck does this happen?? "

" I'm a good friend off the involved young man . this accedent needs a clear reason of why it happened. At least to prevent future problems. "

" Rhett Word is my brother in law. I just want everyone to know that although the injuries were non life threatening, they were very extensive. Rhett was the driver and received the majority of the impact. He is a young sailor witha wife and baby girl. Why someone was going the wrong way on the highway makes no sense to me or my family. Rhetts Naval career could be over. Thankfully, he and his passenger were not killed. He is now home in Texas with his family, resting and waiting for Christmas with his loved ones. "

I know, I know. It’s been a long time. But I’m back on the blogs again and thanks to my coverage of education I’ve got something to say in light of tomorrow’s holiday. Faith in the ruins

I interviewed an 85-year-old woman on Monday. I will surely never hear “young man” as much as I did for the hour I talked with Merry Loo. “Young man,” she said. “Go out there and find a wife.” Go out and find a wife. Procreate. Buy a house. Be civic minded. Treat people with fairness, honesty and [...]

Fearful Football Forecast: Week 12

Are some of these leagues getting so predictable that even I can predict them right? I was just doing last week’s totals and can’t believe I again nailed just about all of them. The one miss, the Cowboys, of course. I generally haven’t fared well in these things at other papers, seriously! 13-1 again, now [...]

The poison of ideology

Ideology is often the bane of this blog. I say this at the risk of alienating some of the most frequent commentators. But it needs to be said: Ideology is one of the great poisons of the modern age, remnants of which survive into the postmodern world we now live in. For evidence, just read some of the [...]
