Huskies heat up, grill Grizzlies

PORTERVILLE -- The Hanford West High Huskies erupted for 28 points in the first quarter, and rolled on to an 82-45 victory over Granite Hills in a non-league boys basketball game Tuesday night.

Carlos Cortez and Jeff Martin led five scorers in double figures with 15 points apiece.

"We came out shooting really well in the first quarter,'' Huskies coach Tim Caudillo said. "We had four different players hit 3-pointers.''

The Huskies (6-2) finished with 11 3-pointers, with Martin drilling five and Cortez sinking three.

Scooter Coleman added 12 points, Warren Moon had 11 and Curtis Williams added 10.

Rodney Webster, meanwhile, filled in effectively for point guard Roy Ramirez, who sat out with an ankle injury.

"He played a very good defensive game, and he was very smart offensively,'' Caudillo said.

The Huskies led 28-7 at the end of the first quarter, and 45-20 at halftime. Hanford West maintained the edge in the second half, outscoring the Grizzlies 35-25.

Granite Hills dropped to 3-3.

Hanford West will be back in action tonight, playing Fresno in the Holiday Invitational Tournament at Hoover High in Fresno. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Hoover's west gym.

The Huskies are off to a strong start despite the loss of Mohamed Fara, the school's all-time lead scorer. Their victory Tuesday snapped a two-game skid, which came after a school-record 5-0 start.

Hanford West is in the midst of a busy early-season slate in which they'll play 10 games over a 12-day span.

38 Things

I know, I know. It’s been a long time. But I’m back on the blogs again and thanks to my coverage of education I’ve got something to say in light of tomorrow’s holiday. (haha, I rhyme, and get ready, because this is going to be cheesy). So, in school, the teachers typically have their students write [...]

Faith in the ruins

I interviewed an 85-year-old woman on Monday. I will surely never hear “young man” as much as I did for the hour I talked with Merry Loo. “Young man,” she said. “Go out there and find a wife.” Go out and find a wife. Procreate. Buy a house. Be civic minded. Treat people with fairness, honesty and [...]

Fearful Football Forecast: Week 12

Are some of these leagues getting so predictable that even I can predict them right? I was just doing last week’s totals and can’t believe I again nailed just about all of them. The one miss, the Cowboys, of course. I generally haven’t fared well in these things at other papers, seriously! 13-1 again, now [...]

The poison of ideology

Ideology is often the bane of this blog. I say this at the risk of alienating some of the most frequent commentators. But it needs to be said: Ideology is one of the great poisons of the modern age, remnants of which survive into the postmodern world we now live in. For evidence, just read some of the [...]
