Nine Tigers advance to Bash quarterfinals

LEMOORE -- Kent Olson didn't want to leave anyone out, so he took some time to look at some old photographs hanging in the Lemoore High wrestling room.

"We've had a number of brothers come through here in my 21 years at Lemoore High. We've had the Rochas, Huizars, Pendletons, Roman-Marins, Camposes, Cabreras, Silvas, Brookses and Ryders," Olson said. "A coach once told me that you'll know when you have a successful program when you start having sets of brothers."

And of all the brothers that have come through the Lemoore wrestling program, none have made the impact on a single team like Julian, Alex Perez and Silverio Esparza are this season.

All three are starters and all three advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lemoore Bash on Friday at the Lemoore High Event Center. The Tigers had nine wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals and are in second place after the first day of competition with 98 points. Red Bluff is in the lead with 106 points, followed by the Tigers, College Park (89), Northview (88) and Montclair (84.5).

"We weren't sure that Silverio would start for us this season, but he has been tough and not just as a freshman but against any age," Olson said. "I believe all three made it to the quarterfinals at the Lou Bronzan and all three wrestled tough at the TOC."

Esparza is the Tigers' freshman 103-pounder and recorded a pair of pins and will open this morning with Clovis West's Vince Rodriguez.

"It's crazy wrestling with my brothers on the team. I've watched them wrestle some pretty tough matches," Esparza said. "I've learned to finish my shots better from Alex and I've learned to use my under hooks better from Julian."

Alex Perez is a sophomore 119-pounder, who recently entered the Lemoore lineup when A.J. Jaramillo made a cut to 112 pounds to help bolster the team's lineup. Alex Perez won his first two matches by fall and will take on Monache's Sam Orozco in the quarterfinals.

"It can get annoying some times wrestling with my brothers. They talk too much and it kind of bugs me," Alex Perez said. " But it really feels good to have all of us in the lineup, though. I think we all can make the finals tomorrow if we wrestle hard."

Julian Perez has been in the Lemoore lineup for two seasons after transferring from Hanford High and now is one of the top 130-pounders in the

picked up two wins by fall and will take on Elk Grove's Miles Francesconi.

"Julian is the best of the three of us," Esparza said.

But both Julian and Alex agree that Esparza, by his senior year, will have had the best high school career.

"Silverio will be the best," Julian Perez said. "He works a lot harder than we do."

"I think that Silverio has the ability to be the best of the group," Olson said. "The third or second brother is usually the better one. He's watched and learned from his brothers. We've seen this before here with some of the brothers that have come through our program."

Also advancing to the quarterfinals for Lemoore; Brandon Rocha was 2-0 with a pin at 125 and will take on Montcalir's Josh Seeley. Nick Sierra was 2-0 with a technical fall at 140 and will face Bullard's Josh Vanhaaster.

James Currier was 2-0 at 145 and will battle Livermore's Stephan De La Cruz, Vincent Rubio was 2-0 at 152 with a technical fall and will face Arganaut's Will Demonson, Stephen Martinez was 2-0 at 189 and will neet Livermore's Shawne Hoehne.

Lemoore heavyweight Loren Baize was 2-0 with two pins and will face Red Bluff's Forrest Garner.

"This is a group that we've seen coming for a long time now," Olson said. "There are teams out there in our section like Selma and Clovis that are going to have a great year, but I really think that we are a team that can surprise some people at the end of the season."

Olson has coached the Tigers to 13 consecutive West Yosemite League titles.

Also alive for the Tigers is Jaramillo and Luis Navarro at 130 pounds. Both are two wins away from placing coming out of the consolation bracket.

Hanford West's Jonathan Garcia advanced to the quarterfinals at 215 and will take on College Park's Ruben Perez. Garcia picked up two wins by fall.

The Huskies' Lima Harley (112) is alive in the consolation bracket, as is Zack Zuniga at 189.

Hanford West is in 35th place with 39 points.

Hanford has a pair of wrestlers coming back through the consolation bracket. Gabriel Velasquz (125) and Tanner Roberts (215) are both two wins away from a medal. The Bullpups are in 50th place with 20 points.

Wrestling continues this morning at 9 a.m.
