Huskies shoot down Redwood
By Jeremy Luchau
HANFORD -- Jordan Clement came off the bench for 14 points and helped the Hanford West High boys basketball team shoot Redwood out of its pesky zone defense en rout to a 64-40 West Yosemite League victory on Friday.
"I just want to take time and attribute this win to the Hanford West boosters," Hanford West coach Tim Caudillo said. "They bought us a 'Gun' machine and it's helped our kids tremendously with our shooting. You could really see it tonight with the way Jordan and Roy (Ramirez) shot."
Ramirez was 5-for-6 shooting in the first quarter, as the Huskies (15-7 overall, 2-0 in league) raced to a 21-13 lead.
After a sloppy and slow second period where the teams combined for just 13 points, the Huskies led 27-20.
Clement caught fire and knocked down three 3-point buckets in the third period and Redwood (12-6, 0-2) was forced out of its zone defense and the Huskies opened the game with 27 points in the period.
"Roy really inspired me and made me want to get out there and shoot and knock some shots down," Clement said. "I felt hot when I got in there and we shot them right out of that zone."
Redwood played most the game without 6-foot-5 forward Money Nagra, who netted 20 points in a 67-59 victory over the Huskies in the semifinals of the Polly Wilhelmsen Invitational last week.
Nagra was off to a hot start with six points early in the first quarter, but twisted his ankle and did not return.
"You hate to see something like that happen," Caudillo said. "It is part of the game, though. He was really on fire early. On the other hand, though, we are dealing with the same thing so I can really feel for them."
Hanford West is still playing without senior wing Jeff Martin.
Ramirez picked up his play against the Rangers this time around. He had a tough time at the Polly and the Huskies were 4-for-25 from 3-point range.
Ramirez pumped in a game-high 20 points and added five steals and two assists. Clement added 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting from behind the arc and Warren Moon tallied 10 points and nine rebounds.
"We haven't had a lot of time to practice and it's good to be in league now with time to get back in the gym and practice," Caudillo said. "With the new equipment we have, the kids are able to come in and knock out 100 or so shots pretty quick and that's what we focussed on. We didn't shoot the ball very well the last time we played them."
The Huskies shot 44 percent from the field and 27 percent from 3-point range on Friday.
Hanford West kept pace with first-place Hanford with the victory. The Huskies play at Golden West next Wednesday before returning home for a showdown with the Bullpups next Friday.
"Every game in league this year is going to be a tough one," Caudillo said. "We were 1-5 against WYL teams in December, so for us it's nice to be 2-0 right now."
Donald Lee led Redwood with 10 points.
In junior varsity action, Hanford West defeated Redwood 42-36 to improve to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in league. Eric Smith led the Huskies with 13 points and Sean Borboa added 12.
The Hanford West freshman team evened up it's WYL record to 1-1 and is now 9-6 overall with a 51-28 victory over Redwood. Andrew Hew led the Huskies with 11 points and Najee Mims added 10.
