Calhoun may stand trial again

(11:55 a.m. Thursday)

Clinton Calhoun may stand trial again for charges of attempted rape and battery after his new defense attorney announced this morning her intent to file a motion for a new trial.

A jury of his peers found Calhoun, 31, guilty of the charges in January, for which he was scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 27. However, the case was further postponned after a unexplained two-hour closed door court session between visiting Judge Edward M. Lacy Jr. and the attorneys involved in the case.

During the 9:30 a.m. proceedings, it came to light that Calhoun dismissed his previous defense attorney, Eric Hamilton, and is pursuing a motion for a new trial with attorney Donna Tartar.

" How long are we going to continue to waste our hard earned money supporting clint calhoun. He was tried and found guilty. now all of a sudden he had fired his first attorney. Why didnt that come out before the trial ended. Is this just another ploy to stay out of prison. personally prison is the best place for him. Hes done many crimes and never done the time its time for him to be a man and except responsibility for his actions instead of wasting our tax dollars. "

" We don't like the outcome so we fire one attorney and get another? Enough is enough already. He needs to move on to prison and do his time. Another waste of tax payer money. "

" Sounds like a ploy to stretch out his time in County jail so he gets credit for time served before going to the big house. Attorneys can file motions all they want, doesn't mean it will stick. I'm just sayin'... "

" I bet that if Ron and Sherrill were paying for his attorney instead of the taxpayers he would have been put a way a long time ago. Enough is enough. His victim deserves justice instead of being victimized all over again! "

" You people are ignorant and mean!
I personally pray for all of you that no one in your family ever makes mistakes or gets caught up in drugs because you obviously wil have NO compassion for them.
This is how our justice system works, if it were your family member rather than Clint Calhoun you would be thankful for the system.
Get off your high horses and learn some compassion!! "

" To amazed
I think that the rest of use see things with eyes open and you are wearing blinders. If it were one of our family member that had a drug problem and had done the things that clint has done they would of been in prison along time ago. so you keep praying for all of us and I will pray for you that you will take off the blinders and see this for waht it is........ clint hiding behind his dads position in this community "

Observant wrote on Mar 28, 2008 12:51 PM:

" Thi s is in response to "Amazed"

Do you want to explain were the compassion is for the victim? Don't sit there and say others are heartless. It is very obvious that this criminal is getting special treatment because he is the son of the DA. It is rubbed in the publics face everytime it comes out in the paper. You need to get over it family member of not. He did it and he needs to do the time like everyone else. You should be amazed that he even done something so in compassionate in the first place. There is help for him out there. He is the one that chooses not to take advantage of that help. HELLO...its not like it is his first offense!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Why Not Another Trial wrote on Mar 28, 2008 3:36 PM:

" To Amazed, I agree with you let's take some of that money back from the unqualified city manager and re-try a matter that has already been to trial. Why not, maybe declare a mistrial and supress information so as to not allow him a fair defense. He walks, the problem is solved the first conviction is set aside. Was that your game plan Amazed. Ron and Sherill do deserve a break they need to have their son treated like anyone else who has broken the law. Receive treatment again for his drug abuse, psychological issues, incarceration and release hopefully with a new straight as an arrow life ahead of him. That's what I am hoping for Ron and Sherill because you as a family have paid long enough. You don't need this constant ranting in the news and allegations of partial treatment, you haven't done anything that any other parent wouldn't have done for their kids, that's why their our kids. I don't care if they are in their 60's their still our kids. We may not like the behavior but we still love our kids. "

Why Not Another Trial wrote on Mar 28, 2008 3:51 PM:

" I know the Calhoun's Ron and Jess both and I can promise you one thing they don't know what favortism is either one of them. They were both true to their word protected our streets and if they did anything they may have sided on the cautious side to avoid favortism. You treat them with respect and that is what you get back, it hasn't changed. Everytime Ron does an interview it's a setup to quarry him about Clint instead of the task at hand. That's why he quit giving the sentinel interviews. So let the man do his job leave his family out of it and let Clint stand up be a man and do what he has to do to straighten his life out. There is an Indian saying don't criticize another until you have worn his moccasins. Please use that to understand you none of you know what has happened the entirety of Clint's life, just whats printed in the paper. You don't know the involvement Ron has had in this case he wouldn't even let it be prosecuted by his office. DA's don't support your children?? "

Why Not Another Trial wrote on Mar 28, 2008 4:00 PM:

" D.A.'s don't support your children - what Ron is suppose to come to work and quit being a father. That isn't the man I want running the District Attorney's Office. I want a compassionate, caring legal mind who can understand the love of a parent. Understand that the behavior of the parent is separate and complete from the childs. Ron I take my hat off to you and wish you and Sherill as well as Clint the best outcome possible in this case. You know we always say we want compassion for the victims, well can you not see how these parents are victims as well, they work hard serve their community do the best to raise their kids and it doesn't work out for one and now stones are cast at them. They are talked about behind their backs, mean things are said in these blogs because we live in a mean society right now. This just irritates me to no end, someone trys to do right and you don't see it. Ron turned this over to DOJ as he should now let the process work. "

Even more amazed... wrote on Mar 28, 2008 5:32 PM:

" I sure hope my children NEVER get into drugs like he did. HOWEVER... he does have to be responsible for his actions, drugs or not! "

Jack wrote on Mar 28, 2008 6:14 PM:

" Compassion for Calhoun? Maybe you could have said that before a jury of his peers found him guilty. NOW HE'S GUILTY. All pretenses are gone. This is ridiculous that because he fired his attorney he can get a new trial. "Well, this one 'failed me,' so let's try a new one." What heppens if he's found guilty in the next one? Is he going to keep switching lawyers?

Enough already. Put him away. "

Amazed wrote on Mar 28, 2008 6:53 PM:

" Sorry people, I am not a relative of the Calhoun family. I am an aquaintance.
Now I truely see that you read something partialy and draw your own conclusions to fit what you want.
Am I wrong or do we all not have the right to appeal or a new trial if something was handled wrong.
I do feel for the victim in all this. ALL of the victims. "

To Amazed and Why Not Another Trial: wrote on Mar 29, 2008 1:52 AM:

" Compassion, oh please Ron Calhoun doesn't know what the word means. I have been there with a family member that committed far less of a crime, no previous record, a couple of months went by in jail before anyone showed any compassion at all and it wasn't even a violent crime, or drugs. So when he learns to show compassion to others maybe I might consider showing some compassion to him. I doubt that will ever happen. I hope his kid rots in jail, after all how many trials and how many chances does his kid get before he has to serve the time for the crime??? "

Blue Falcon wrote on Mar 29, 2008 3:35 AM:

" I find it odd, just like a few others that he fired his attorney but it just now comes up; after he was found guilty... Sounds like "Daddy" was feeding him legal advice on the "what's and what not's" to do to delay prison. I'm sorry to say it, "Daddy has his hands all in the punch bowl on this one"! "

Craziness wrote on Mar 29, 2008 10:35 AM:

" It is amazing that this "man" hasn't served any time yet they are trying to persue Christensen over a mistake not a crime. It is time to get priorities straight! "

truly "amazed" wrote on Mar 29, 2008 10:56 AM:

" That anyone would have any sort of compassion for Clint at this point. He did the crime, he was found guilty, now he needs to face the consequences. If he felt that his lawyer was mishandling his case, why did he not appeal before he was found guilty? What a waste of time. Even if he was my relative, even if he was my brother, I would tell him, you've got to face the music. Regardless of who the person is to me, they commit the crimes Clint has, they are no longer family to me. "

Response to Blue Falcon wrote on Mar 29, 2008 11:49 AM:

" As you would if your child was convicted. Ron has the education to back it up, you don't... just a guess by the right wing opinions you post. "

Mike M. wrote on Mar 29, 2008 4:59 PM:

" Re; Amazed; Ignorant, mean. and has no compassion . Hmmm, I can live with that. The thing I take offence to is when you say"This is how our system works". I'm the father of four adult children . My youngest ,26 fits your discreption of "family member makes mistakes ". My youngest has had several arrests . The last being a solo D.U.I. accident with injuries The injuries were described as a bruise and a cut lip. (DUI is a very serious offence)The justice system (DA) never once gave any consderation to the fact my child remained in K.C.J. through the entire court process (4 mths.) or to my childs efforts at AA .Nor to the support ,counseling and every other thing we as caring parents and family were willing to provide in our childs recovery over alcoholism. So on 10/28//07 after being sentenced for a 3rd DUI my little girl wrote a good bye letter to her 2 children and started her 4 year prison term. Thats the law,Thats how the system works "

Amazed Why Not a new trial wrote on Mar 29, 2008 5:38 PM:

" In response: Let me get this right your child committed a crime and didn't get off scott free, your the biggest hypochrit I've ever heard from. Yet you say that is Ron Calhoun's fault the man is a District Attorney, that is what he does for a living. But may I ask you a series of questions, did you or your spouse commit the crime by havning a child? Were you raked over the coals in the press time and again? Was your ability to do your job come into question because of your child's crime? I didn't think so, my point exactly. "

You Have No Idea wrote on Mar 29, 2008 7:37 PM:

" There must have been something that the judge read in the appeal for a new trial that caused him to make the decision that he did. Maybe all of the circumstances related to the crime were not presented? This judge is from Modesto and does not know the Calhoun's personally. Some of you remind me of people who would love to have lived in the times where people were stoned. I can see some of you just waiting to cast the first stone...but let me see...what is the saying? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Good luck fitting that standard. "

DISAPPOINTED wrote on Mar 31, 2008 11:06 AM:

" In response to dose
Im sure we would all try to help our children. But in my eyes they havent helped him by him getting away with all the things that he has done. drugs, stealing, alcohol, and the worst of all attempted RAPE. where does it stop when does he pay for his crimes do we have to wait until he does something as horrible as murder. he needs to serve his time just like anybody else. I just wish everybody would stop making excuses for him. clint stand up and take your punishment like a man and quit hiding behind your fathers title. "

Mother of a Son wrote on Apr 1, 2008 12:53 PM:

" The story of Mr. Calhoun breaks my heart because of what his parents have had to endure. My son also got into trouble as a teen and it was a nightmare and a struggle to see the light of day. I was a single mom with a son that did not obey any kind of rules, etc. Our society is throwing away these young adults.... they need to work and learn how to be productive, actually saved from themselves. College isn't for everyone, but there needs to be training available for these young men that have trouble finding themselves at such a young age. Parents are helpless.... and so is our school system. There's really no dicipline and people are taught they don't need to be responsible for their own actions. What a waste of our human race. I'm surprised we haven't figured out a soluation to this mess that our kids are in. We need more TV, Movies, Music and role models that are the worst examples of mankind. NOT! God help us all. "

knows wrote on Apr 3, 2008 12:01 AM:

" I knew Ron when he was protecting our streets. He was a good man then. If he and his wife choose to stand by there son then that shows charecter not fault. Just because hes in office dose not mean he quits being a father. Do what you need to do as a father . "

Why Not Another Trial wrote on Apr 3, 2008 8:18 AM:

" To Mother of a Son, perhaps a bootcamp program for kids could have helped your son. I would think the county should stand up and provide that option to some parents. You are absolutely right, some young men won't listen to anyone, parents, police, probation anyone. Those hard cases need an additional option and I think bootcamp based on the military style would be helpful for them to learn responsibility and to learn many other valuable lessons only available through such a program. But sometimes it can be that the only answer is to take them away from society forever. But hopefully that is a last result. "
