3 arrested after car chase

A brief car chase around the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino just after midnight early Monday morning led to the arrest of two adults and a juvenile that were all reportedly under the influence of alcohol, according to Kings County Sheriff's Department officials.

Hotel security called sheriff's deputies to the scene when they noticed two vehicles driving recklessly and chasing one another around the casino parking lot at 12:01 a.m. When a deputy attempted to detain the vehicles by flashing his patrol car emergency lights and sounding the siren, the vehicles fled the scene.

Deputy Scott Ward was able to pursue only one of the vehicles, which finally stopped in the 16500 block of Saltgrass Street on the Santa Rosa Rancheria. Once parked in a residential driveway, all four passengers reportedly tried to flee the scene, including the 15-year-old, who apparently jumped through an open window of the residence to escape.

Delbert Ramirez, 19, and the 15-year-old girl were both arrested on a charge of public intoxication, while driver, Margo Resendez, 18, was charged with failure to yield, child endangerment, driving under the influence and being an unlicensed driver. All three were booked into the Kings County Jail and the Juvenile Detention Facility, respectively. Resendez was being held in lieu of $65,000 bail.

The final passenger, Theodore Ramirez, was also detained, but was later be released at the scene.

Delbert Ramirez was also arrested on burglary charges stemming from an unrelated investigation.

All four of the vehicle occupants are allegedly Lemoore residents.

There is no way to truly measure this, but you made the roads safer that night. It is nice to see with all the departmental turmoil in the air, you do what you do best-catching criminals. Thanks. "

" Thank you Deputy Ward for making the parking lot of the casino and our roadways a safer place. I have heard about Rez and all the alcohol abuse out there. It is sad the tribe allows this type of behavior.

Someone should do an impact study on the effect gambling has had on this community. Sure the palace provides jobs, but, they also have created an envoirment that creates addiction and a 24 hour establishment for those who want to throw their lives away doing drugs and spending their childrens lunch money "

" OK - don't get me wrong or paint me as a racist. Whale hunts are illegal but Alaskan natives are allowed to take the occasional whale. Northwest tribes are allowed to spear fish for salmon even though it would be illegal for anyone else. Why are they allowed to avoid these laws? It is part of their herritage and culture. I have no problem with this and I don't think many do - well, maybe salmon fishermen are a bit jealous. Yet we have allowed "sovereign tribes" to do what they want on their lands - despite the law. So when did gambling and fireworks become part of Native American culture and herritage? Can they do anything on their land? What next - Tachi Palace and Brothel? What's the difference? How about meth labs or pot farms? It starts small if you remember - it was just Bingo at first. That seem harmless enough - right? We have all heard the analogy about the frog not jumping out of the water if you boil it slowly - we've been boiled slowly. "

why should they care? wrote on Apr 3, 2008 5:32 PM:

" Why should they? Their tribal members get a free house and lots of money, regardless of what they do. No one takes care of their yards on the rez. They look horrible. Plus, they get in trouble, the tribe doesn't take away their money, their "tribal welfare checks." They have no reason to do anything except be drunks and drug addicts out there. "

" This isn't funny. The Palace is the most safe place to go in the whole county. The media is once again picking on the reservation. Every community in this County throws rocks at fire trucks and buses and has a 24 hour entertainment destination for meth addicts. Shame on you media for highlighting crazy criminal behavior at the reservation. You are supposed to ignore it. Get a little sensitivity. "

" Ramirez and Resendez? Those don't sound like American Indian names. Half the people living in the Central Valley have Indian in them (the real ones from Oklahoma) but we don't get $7000 a month tax free. "

Amanda R wrote on Apr 4, 2008 9:52 AM:

" Yeah, blame everything on the Palace. Guess noone has this thing called "free-will" or "common sense". Drugs are everywhere, not just out at the Palace. Get rid of the casino, and the reservation will still be there, but I bet the drug problem won't cease in Kings County. If any of you know anyone who lives on the reservation, you would know that they're not all drug addicts and drunks. But by all means, judge them all by the actions of some. "

to Question? wrote on Apr 4, 2008 9:54 AM:

I warn others if in the middle of the night you get lost don't go on the TACHI reservation. Gang members and drug lords will take care of you. Those tribe members don't even follow general laws that keep society together. CAN THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT do more to clean up this trash DUMP that we have in the community? "

to Amanda wrote on Apr 5, 2008 10:35 AM:

" Way to miss the point! We're not talking about drugs everywhere, but in a concentrated spot here in Kings County, namely on the reservation. It seems like most of the news about drugs comes from the reservation. It is very concentrated over there and the tribe is turning a blind eye to it. They don't seem to care about it at all, as long as they get their money from their casino. Who needs laws when you have "tribal welfare checks"? "

" Your my Hero Deputy!!! In the middle of the night your out protecting us citizens while we sleep. I commend you for being brave and facing these drugged out Indians who care nothing about anything other than their illegal dope. Over the years I have kept up with all the arrest made out on the REZ... from reading the Sentinel. It seems like some of the TACHI families have all been arrested at one time or another. "TACHI RESERVATION", The shame of Kings County.... "

Mr. Wango wrote on Apr 6, 2008 3:35 PM:

" This all started out with Deputy Ward doing his job making this community a little safer. Yes the Santa Rosa Rancheria isn't the safest place to be.

A tribe or any group of people can't be fixed by simply arresting everyone. You can't arrest yourself out of a cultural problem. A mix a law enforcement and social change is needed to fix this problem. I have noticed Tachi tribel members have moved into the Armona area. These houses are easy to pick out.

Deputy Ward and the sheriff's office can only do so much. If a group of people want to live below what we believe is an exceptable of conduct there isn't a lot we can do. The change has to come from within. All we can do is support people like Deputy Ward in their efforts. "

Proud Native American wrote on Apr 7, 2008 12:37 PM:

" I would also like to thank Deputy Ward for his efforts in keeping the Lemoore Area a safe place to live. However, I disagree with the comments that have already been posted. The Tachi Palace should not be blamed for the individuals that broke the law and were arrested. It is the individual that should have the self will not to drink , do drugs, and break laws. Alcohol and Drugs are throughout the whole county. I live in the City of Lemoore and there are drug busts and drunk drivers arrested on City and County streets as well as at the reservation. An addiction can not be blamed on any one establishment, if that is the case then the community should also blame all the stores that sell alcohol. Once again it is the responsibility of the individual to have the courage to say no. Just because some Native American Tribes get per capita (money) does not give anyone any right to belittle them, I know several people at the reservation and they a I dont see the community complaining when the Tachi Tribe donates money to the community. "

" I thought your comment was so true... I have the same problem. My neighbors yard is surely the sore spot on the block... Their music is always blaring and there dogs have mang...What a weird culture...Can't they use some of there indian welfare check to pay for a gardner at least... "

Confused TAX PAYER wrote on Apr 7, 2008 8:50 PM:

" I pay taxes, why arent the deputies patrolling around my country home on the north side of Kings. Instead there providing security to Tachi Indians who pay no taxes. I know it's a problem area, but look over the years all the attention they have had and most revert to there stupid ways... Your not going to chang an idiot. Instead protect those hard working tax payers. We appreciate the work and service you fine men/deputies do... I'd even write you a thank you letter and bake you some cookies. "

Amanda R wrote on Apr 8, 2008 12:49 PM:

" Well said Proud Native American. I see a rampant drug problem everywhere I go, but everyone wants to pick on one specific group. If you don't like it, don't go to the reservation, or maybe help out someone in your neighborhood get clean. Last time I checked, there were more than just natives with poor lawn care/house care skills. What does that have to do with this article about some kids who didn't follow the law? To the Taxpayer who feels their money is going towards indian security, they have their own security on the reservation. This chase happened in public until it was carried onto the reservation, which means it was a Sheriffs job to take care of. Maybe they should've let them run rampant until they struck an innocent bystander. Then you could've complained about noone doing anything. This was personal choice, the tribe didn't give them a how-to guide on drugs and running from cops. Don't condemn the whole tribe because you've heard bad things about some of them. Or, complain until they stop donating to the community, then complain that they're being selfish. "

Reread wrote on Apr 9, 2008 9:21 AM:

" Reread the article Amanda - it says the problem was first reported by Palace Security - sounds like it started on the rez to me. "

Amanda R wrote on Apr 9, 2008 2:53 PM:

" To Reread: The pursuit with Sheriffs did not start "on the rez", Palace security does not control the roads. The Sheriffs Department patrols 17th and Jersey (I believe thats the other road to the Palace) and they chased them down to Saltgrass, which is reservation land. Also, it never said Tachi Palace security tried to detain them, meaning the Deputy was the only on in pursuit. I know how to read fine, thank you. "

To Amanda wrote on Apr 9, 2008 7:19 PM:

" The article says that Hotel Security called the Sheriff because the cars were DRIVING RECKLESSLY AND CHASING ONE ANOTHER OTHER AROUND THE CASINO PARKING LOT----etc. The Casino parking lot is on Tribal land. "

reread again Amanda wrote on Apr 10, 2008 8:54 AM:

" The article clearly says that it was HOTEL SECURITY that first noticed it and that they were ON hotel property and THEN the Sheriffs became involved. It STARTED in the parking lot and then they left. Why is that so difficult to understand? They were on Saltgrass Street when they were FINALLY stopped. Here's the passage so you don't have to go back to the top to reread it again. Caps added to make rereading easier.
"Hotel security called sheriff's deputies to the scene when THEY noticed two vehicles driving recklessly and chasing one another AROUND THE CASINO PARKING LOT (on the Rez I think) at 12:01 a.m. When a deputy attempted to detain the vehicles by flashing his patrol car emergency lights and sounding the siren, the vehicles FLED the scene.
Deputy Scott Ward was able to pursue only one of the vehicles, which FINALLY stopped in the 16500 block of Saltgrass Street"
The problem started AT the casino - which is ON the Rez - which was what I said in the first place. I teach Reading and would be glad to help you with comprehension practice if you would like. "

Amanda R wrote on Apr 10, 2008 11:09 AM:

" If you read my posting, I stated "the CHASE started in public". I did not say the original problem started in public. My point is, why does Confused Taxpayer think that the Sheriffs should not patrol out by the Palace? They also, I believe, pay subsidies to the Sheriffs Department; correct me if I am wrong. I'd be willing to bet this wouldn't be such as issue if the offending party was black/white/asian/mexican. As a matter of fact, a large percentage of people getting in trouble out at the Palace aren't even natives. Don't blame the Palace; blame the individual people. I don't hear many people blaming bars for drunk drivers, do i? "

cynic wrote on Apr 10, 2008 1:28 PM:

" No, I don't think it is a race issue either - but, if any of the other racial groups you mentioned had a large, open all the time location that attracted illicet behavior and drug use - well, that too would be a problem. I don't care that it is an "Indian" casino - I don't like the casino because it is a casino. I guess if they sponser enough concerts at the Fox and donate enough fire trucks to Lemoore, we are supposed to overlook all the harm and see only the good it brings to our community - yeah, right! I think it's ironic that they donated a fire truck. When my brother was a volunteer firefighter in Lemoore he complained that they couldn't get people to show up at fire calls on the rez because people threw rocks at the trucks and firefighters. The whole Indian Casino set up is unfair and reeks of corruption. The article mentioned earlier from Time magazine is excellent and you should check out it out. "
