Our view: Faith is alive in Hanford

WOW! That's the only word we could think of to describe Wednesday evening's event at Coe Park.

Organizers estimate that upwards of 4,000 people attended Hanford's free WOW Jam, which previously has been held in Fresno and other areas in the Central Valley.

This was the first time Stephen and Linda Tavani, founders of the nonprofit WOW International, had worked with Hanford churches.

Spearheaded by Koinonia Christian Fellowship, 300 volunteers from 11 local churches organized and funded the event, which included more than just praise and worship.

Here's just a taste of the incredible outreach and service provided to local folks by these dedicated volunteers:

* Face painting: 166

* Bike repair: 78

* Family portraits: 215

* Kids pictures: 90

* Nails/manicures: 58

* Books read to kids: 58

* Cups of water: 1,445

* Haircuts: 108

* Raffle tickets: 3,401

* Hot meals: 1,784

* Career counseling: 50+

* Makeovers: 29

* Sno Cones: 616

* Plants given away: 136

* Bags of groceries: 700+

More importantly, as a result of the ministering and fellowship, 446 people decided to turn their lives over to Jesus.

This "outpouring of love to a city in need" (Stephen's words) was the definitive demonstration of the dedication shown by local churches and all those who gave of their time and talents to help the less fortunate.

The blessings they heaped upon Kings County residents this week is a testament to the faith that exists within our local churches -- and in our community.

But, I just wonder what the resident atheist(s) think about this?

Probably something like: 'Its not fair; atheists do a lot too!'...

" No, Alejandro. You're wrong. The resident atheists just don't really care and aren't about to "turn their lives over to Jesus." I've never asked for credit for things I've done. Not that insecure. There's no contest here. It was just a fun day for those who wanted to attend. End of story. "

However, as a point of correction (words mean things) Lee Yarbrough , pastor of First Southern Baptist Church "spearheaded" (initiated/instigated/lead the charge) to initially bring the WOWJAM to Hanford. He also served as the Host Pastor. Jeff Acton, a KCF associate, served as the event coordinator. Our heart was to do this, and to promote it as the product of a coalitoion of churches. With that in mind, here is the List of Churches involved in Alphabetical Order:

The "and others" are...
- Chosen Generation
- EPIC
- First Southern Baptist
- Glad Tidings
- Hanford Pentecostal Church of God
- Kings Christian Fellowship
- Koinonia
- Latin American A.G.
- Oasis Church
- Southside Church of God

" That's great that so much was accomplished at this event but I am curious on what the retention rate is on something like this. It says that 446 people turned their lives over to Jesus. But how many of those people truly mean it or will continue down that path? Or do they just get "caught up in the moment" and then fizzle out after a few weeks. Not looking for a fight - just curious because I have never been to anything like this. "

JRC wrote on May 5, 2008 1:37 PM:

Find them, win them, train them, send them. "

Not so mad in Nevada at the moment wrote on May 5, 2008 2:36 PM:

" Then in the process of this finding a "home church" as you called, do you get a lot of people coming and going then? Because say they come to your church but then decide that isn't for them, then go to a different one. How does that affect things? "

This isn't all about YOU, MAG, and I am sorry you took it that way. In fact, I don't know if you're an atheist or not. I only know that you are opinionated. Peroid.

I continue to praise the Sentinel for its reporting of this wonderful event and all of it participants. "

Bubba wrote on May 7, 2008 5:51 PM:

" Alex, talk about being "opinionated." The article doesn't mention anything about the "resident atheist(s)" and yet you think its important to being it up. I say let everyone believe in or not believe in what they want. Sometimes I think you like to just read what you write more than making peace among God's children and helping make a better place to live in. Or making sense for that matter. "

ALEJANDRO wrote on May 7, 2008 9:03 PM:

" Do I detect a bit of prejudice there, 'Bubba?'

I don't believe I was addressing you either, unless you are a resident atheist or are related to Mag.

Why does this great story offend you, ‘Bubba?'

I continue to applaud the Sentinel for documenting this wholesome story for our town.

Sorry you don't like it too. "

To Not so Mad wrote on May 8, 2008 8:12 AM:

" Being a Christian, I am glad that I have the ability to choose a home church, a place where I am welcomed and am comfortable worshiping. There is no effect for switching churches, no baptism for coming to a church, and even better no guys in white shirts coming over every few days and asking why I was not there on Sunday.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against your faith, but LDS people are very pushy, and often times I feel uncomfortable talking scripture at the LDS church. Too often I get into a serious discussion with LDS members, and the only answer I get to questions is pray on it. If Joseph Smith or Heavenly Father don't answer me directly, then I am accused of not being sincere in my prayers.

I liked the WOW event because it reinforced the idea that the path to eternal life is through accepting Jesus as our lord and savior. By accepting Jesus, we are accepting that we will live a life like he lived, and although we mortals are not perfect, we are forgiven.

"

Bubba wrote on May 8, 2008 4:23 PM:

" Alex like I said, you have this thing about YOURSELF. I am Catholic, go to church on Sundays and pray that SOME people will gain understanding for their brothers and sisters that don't believe in God and on Monday mornings, I wake up earlier than normal and go clean my CATHOLIC church. Do you do that? Unlike you however, I can live with people of all religions and even those that do have one and tolerate them. After all,that is what AMERICA is all about. The way YOU are quick to point fingers though, you would probably be better suited for life in the Middle East. They have a MAJOR insecurity problem there and so do you. "

ALEJANDRO wrote on May 8, 2008 4:50 PM:

" Well I guess I have to lay it out simply for you, 'Bubba.'

I continue to compliment the Sentinel for its reporting this community exercise in faith and fellowship. Hope you comprehend that.

I was not promoting atheism. I was somewhat cynically waiting for those resident atheists who blog here to weigh in and make the sort of comment I alluded to: that atheists do good things too minus the religious trappings. I guess they chose to not comment at all this time.

Why do you not address me by my Spanish name, ‘Bubba?' I'd like to hear your explanation.

By the way, I am a Catholic also. Pax vobiscum, hermano! "

Scott Tucker wrote on May 9, 2008 2:40 AM:

CC Watchdog wrote on May 9, 2008 11:11 AM:

" See this is the problem of discussing religion amongst friends. Alejandro you are certainly correct in your beliefs, Mag you are entitled to yours, Bubba I don't know what you are entitled to because your selection of a name is rather an instigators ploy for controversy. I think you should all agree it was a benificial event for all who attended and let it go at that. Everyone's private thoughts about religion and their relationship with whom they believe in shouldn't always be shared. We are not going to save all the athiest in the world nor are they going to convert those of us who believe Jesus Christ is our Savior to change our beliefs. Religions are different because we are all different pick or don't pick and believe however you choose is my motto. If you truly believe we were all put here for a purpose perhaps this discussion is it. Religion like Politics is an explosive discussion to say the least. Just do what makes you comfortable and happiest in your daily existence in this beautiful world of ours. Be prepared the answer is near. "

Yes, you commended the sentinel for recognizing. But with the 2nd sentances is what appears to be a gateway for argument. Stirring the pot.
And, can you name some events that a groups of atheists get together and do good for mankind? Because that would somewhat seem like a "happy ending fairytale". and ask ANY atheist. They dont belive in farytales. There are a lot of good hearted people that choose not to believe, I am all for everyone is entitled to their own oppinion/belief. This was just an article showing the community that the town might not be as full of little hoodlums and gang bangers like what is known. Im sure if the atheists put together a WOW day, the sentinel would have an article about it too. From the comment you left, you just seem like you want to start something. "

Don't sell him short he is as articulate as the next person, able to handle himself in every issue but he is a dedicated father and community oriented individual who I think you have misread. Give the man a break don't pick him apart because his wording is suspect in your mind, we all make mistakes in sentences on this blog and it is expected. We are not all Teacher's and Professional Speakers Thank God how boring that would be and mundane at the same time. Give it a rest already and search throuogh some other blogs and read his writings don't let a single paragraph throw you off track. "

The American way is to let both sides respond. I encourage this concept.

Yes I did, and still do, wonder what the 'resident atheists' would think of the events reported by the Sentinel, since these bloggers have been opinionated in other religious topics past.

And a few bloggers here can't grasp the positive experience this event and its reporting entails. The attitude that both 'bubba' and 'whitey' display defines who these people really are, starting with their descriptive personally-selected monikers. We read their comments and wonder.

This was great event and great reporting by the Sentinel, I say again and again. Why do you seem to disagree? "

whitey wrote on May 10, 2008 2:20 PM:

And i believe i said its what APPEARS to be stirring the pot. that is what some people would take it as in bubbas defense. "

one pro and one con..... how could there be a con when a communtiy does good to benefit the COMMUNTIY?

EVERYONE WAS INVITED.

I will be the first to say i'm ignorant because i fail to see the con in this?

so please, alejandro enlighten me....... and as i said before, could you pleases name some activities that a group of atheist put together for the community?
