HANFORD -- A.J. Kirkpatrick came out on a top in a race filled with yellow flags and captured the Western All-Stars Super Dirt Late Models feature race Saturday night at Kings Speedway. Kirkpatrick led from the second lap on, using a series of stellar restarts to stay ahead of the likes of Chris Shannon, Bobby Hogge IV and Mike Johnson.
"It was hard,'' said Kirkpatrick, a driver from Castroville who also won the previous week at Marysville Speedway park. "We just kept digging, kept taking deep breaths. I've got to thank all my people, my sponsors, and everything.''
Jimmy Reeves of Laton won the IMCA Modifieds main, and Loren DeArmond was victorious in the IMCA Stocks feature.
The drivers also did productive work for the American Cancer Society on Saturday night, collecting $1,826.46 in donations from fans at the track.
Kirkpatrick, Johnson, Shannon, Zack Forster and Johnny Malcolm were the top five finishers in the WAS feature. Series points leader Hogge overcame a mechanical problem on the 17th lap to place sixth in a race marred by seven cautions.
Johnson, Hogge, Kirkpatrick and Rob Sanders won heat races, and Shannon captured the trophy dash.
Reeves took the lead on the fourth lap and fought off Paul Stone to come out on top in the 25-lap IMCA Modifieds race. Bryan Burnes was third, followed by Bobby Hogge III and Garrett Steitz.
Burnes and Steve Smothermon took the heat races.
DeArmond, driving a newly painted car, led from wire to wire and held off Ron Hurt to capture the 20-lap IMCA Stocks race. Hurt was second, followed by Andrew Olson and Brandon Hamilton. Points leader J.T. Contente rallied from a crash on the second-lap to take fifth.
Hamilton won the heat race.
The speedway will be dark this weekend. The next show, featuring Kings 360 Bandits and National Wing Sprints, will be May 24.
