Christensen enters plea, faces probation, fine

(3:45 p.m. Tuesday)

Former Hanford city manager Alan Christensen was sentenced to up to a year of probation and a fine after pleading no contest today to a misdemeanor attempted grand theft charge stemming from his short-lived tenure in Hanford.

Christensen, 46, was accused of falsifying a request for payment from Hanford for $1,000 in December 2006. He was facing two misdemeanor counts -- falsifying documents requesting money and taking the money.

The case went to trial this March but resulted in a hung jury. He was scheduled for retrial in mid-June.

It remains unclear how today's plea would impact Christensen's employment as Arvin's top city administrator.

See Wednesday's edition of The Sentinel for more on this story.

" How unfair our district attorney targets city officials that are not on the City Council. If anyone should be charged it should be Mayor Gonzales taking money from Mr.Dowd's wife prior to the City Council voting on a City Attorney's Contract. That $500.00 pocket money for the Mayor cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars. No wonder Mayor Gonzales was selected to stay in office an additional year. He's the perfect fall guy for when things go wrong and he's not smart enough to figure it out or hold out for more money prior to the vote! "

" Alan, you picked the best for the city that you no longer work for. I hope it doesn't harm your career. To the city of Hanford, Mary Lindsay, Tom Haglund (Gilroy's newest CM) and Mr. Dibble, you have someone else you need to answer to. The citizens, and your higher power. I hope you have answers for both and can look yourselves in the mirror. I couldn't. Alan just saved me money as a taxpayer, once again he rises above whatever lowlying piddle and gossip the city has perpetuated. Best of luck Alan. "

" This should have little or no impact on Mr. Christensen in Arvin. The City Council gave a way a much more valuable piece of property to the Cheese Factory and nothing happened to them. That piece is worth much more than $1,000.00 in todays market even. Not to mention in the market they gave it away in.

I think we should let Mr. Christensen do his new job as City Manager in another community and quit haunting the man and his family with our inane prosecution. I don't see the former Travel Bureau Chief of Hanford in the news almost weekly and his crime was fifteen times greater? Might I inquire as to why the persecution of Mr. Christensen? Perhaps it is because his mormon faith doesn't accept the Gay and Lesbian life style? Makes as much sense as anyting I've heard as for the reason for it. Is the deal reached by a man who never should have been prosecuted that big a deal? He made the deal for an opportunity to get on with his life so why don't you let him? "

The man who wants to fire Calhoun wrote on May 28, 2008 8:53 AM:

" At least this thing is finally over and it took the person that only has the only bit of dignity left in this whole thing to take the high road. Calhoun should be fired for letting a misdemeanor go to trial and wasting all of our tax payers money. We could use that money to defend Calhoun's son again. But I guess he is going to make another withdrawl at the bank for that case... "

Alan G. wrote on May 28, 2008 9:40 AM:

" I can just picture Boss Hogg and the rest of the Hanford "Good ol' boys" smoking cigars in a dark room, having a laugh and deciding which outsider who doesn't "go along" to eliminate next.

Honestly, I probably would have taken the same deal in order to avoid the long drives, liars (I mean lawyers) fees and time away from my job and family. Better to pay a small fine rather than rack up $50k to pay an attorney. If the first trial was any indication, he would have beat this again, in my opinion.

Targeted next by the D.A.'s office; County employees who take pens home from the office. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on May 28, 2008 10:00 AM:

" Well the infamous City Council throws another creditable human being under the buss. Are you ready Jan Reynolds it is you they are coming for next. On their witch hunt, it is the next faltering Warlocks turn to be burned at the stake. Jan do us all a favor take it all the way and give testimony to the wrong doing of the City Council and the entire City of Hanford. Lay out all the sorted little details Marcie, Dan, Ayers have so aptly covered by sweeping them under the rug.

Let the City chlldren hear the sorted details of the City Fathers and City Mother in their day to day dealings. Out them for the true underhanded crooks they really are, give that testimony with your head held high on behalf of the citizens of Kings County and the City of Hanford. They pulled a fast one on you and the information of how and when need surface now, prior to the elections. Let the voters know what goes on behind those closed doors, do it quickly.
Please for the benefit of Hanford the town you worked so hard for. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on May 28, 2008 4:38 PM:

" To Alan G.

Aptly put Alan, they aren't fooling anyone but theirselves on this issue. Rienhart can give all the speeches he wants to give and be able to point back at this one case when he runs for the DA's spot. Oh I'm sorry he will have the cruicifiction I mean trial of Jan Reynolds to hold up for the city of Hanford to see as well.

Boss Hogg will set back light his cigar and laugh as he spends his million dollar salary as City Attorney and additional cases he must bill the city for will give him that Island he has been dreaming about within the community. They will probably start dredging for the big cement pond by next year. Uncle Jed's coming out to witness a weiner roast this summer ya know.

Boss Hogg owns the banker Drysdale by now, I am sure and as for Eli May well we all know what her part was in this Clampet the series. Within' her "double barrel sling shots" and all, Mrs. Drysdale never had a clue.

Hanford now you lay your heads down to sleep. . . . "

To fire Calhoun wrote on May 28, 2008 6:39 PM:

" Hopefully this is Calhoun's last term. He has been kept in there by the apathy of voters who have let the good old boys continue their reign. The voters need to get involved and start voting for candidates who are not endorsed & supported by the "powers to be" in this town. In the past candidates, through endorsements, are only too happy to run on the "coat tails" of the so called "elite". So on June 3rd and every other election Vote for Candidates NOT endorsements! "

W.O.W. wrote on May 29, 2008 12:47 PM:

" To Watchdog Fred:

I'm a little confused by your suggestion that "his morman faith" which "doesn't allow him to accept Gay and Lesbian lifestyle", has bearing on his firing and subsequent charges against him.

Are you suggesting he stepped on a toe or toes of the "good ol boys/girls" that happen to be gay or lesbian?

Please clarify yourself for all of us in Hanford land. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on May 29, 2008 9:03 PM:

" To W.O.W. - I was simply stating that there was a witch hunt launched against Mr. Christensen and they were willing to accept any excuse to get rid of him. Right down to and including his religion, he stirred the pot too much, wanted too many aduits, sought accountability by the City. Like I do from time to time upset people and some don't like that.

I wouldn't dare say any of the City Council was gay. Nor imply they were, Abnormal yes but not gay. Without character and integrity most likely, look at the new City Manager, they made that decision based on what?

Lastly, one of the persons who turned Mr. Crhistensen in is now the Deputy City Manager looking for Gary to make a bobble and he will be history. Now what would you make of all this?

Our City Fathers and Mother hard at work. Hey that is catchy we ought to paint it on a sign outisde the City Hall.

Hey Marcie how are gas sales at $4.399 a gallon? "

The Oracle says... wrote on May 29, 2008 10:48 PM:

" ...What a bunch of hypocrites you are......One one hand if the DA's office didn't prosecute someone because it was "petty", you would be calling for his head. Then when they do prosecute a CRIME, brought to them for prosecution, where there was a case, and they prosecute it, and get a CONVICTION, you whine that it should not have been tried. You cannot have it both ways people. Nobody is above the law.....Christensen of all people knew better, and did it anyway. He got caught and plead guilty (no contest). How, pray tell, is this in any way the fault of the DA's office? This argument is as nutty as paying millions to the family of a kid who got plowed by illegally crossing the street...This is exactly whats wrong with our system. Its the "someone has to pay" syndrome, because it's not my fault excuse. "

Watchdog Fred wrote on Jun 1, 2008 8:16 AM:

" To Oracle well from what I understand it was Mr. Dibble who was aware of what Christensen was doing and supposedly didn't say anything. Well then why isn't Mr. Dibble being put on trial for a conspiracy and culpable for the damages for the part he played in it? After all a crime is a crime is it not, having knowledge of a crime and not reporting it priot to it happening is a crime isn't it? Aren't you an accessory before the fact? Way in Oracle, how say you?
After all as you said a crime is a crime! Why isn't it a crime for city employees to read a confidential fax that does not pertain to them?
If you want to usurp your authority and talk about crime what about all this evidence, is it not acceptable because they are in the loop and Christensen wasn't being an outsider.
Oracle if you can't see what this was all about don't drive a truck full of lemons over any railroad tracks. I normally respect your opinions but find this issue and Chris Chans not feasible. Misenheimer is the one responsible there. "
