4 Bullpups will travel to islands for softball tourney

HANFORD -- Four softball players from Hanford High have discovered that hard work on the softball diamond can pay big dividends -- and sometimes when it's least expected. Jaclyn Dias, Stephanie Holiday, Kelsi Maris and Jasmine Silva have recently been selected to play in the Club USA National High School Girls Softball Championship Tournament, which is scheduled for Dec. 28-Jan. 5 on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

The tournament will include 36 teams, representing most of the states. The Hanford players will play on one of two California teams, though not necessarily the same squad.

"It's kind of scary,'' said Dias, the Hanford junior-to-be who's known as "J.D.'' "But it'll be good to meet new people and see how they play.''

Most of all, it'll be an opportunity for the players to display their talents in front of college coaches.

The Hanford players -- none of whom have been to Hawaii -- didn't figure on going to the islands any time soon.

They were playing at a recent tournament with Hanford High's summer team in Clovis, when their performances prompted an official from Spokane, Wash.-based Club USA to offer them spots for the Hawaii trip.

Hanford coach Donnie Fagundes had no idea that was coming.

"I had nothing to do with it,'' he said.

Holiday and Maris were picked as utility players, Silva as a shortstop and Dias as a catcher.

Silva called it a "really big surprise,'' as well as a great opportunity, echoing the thoughts of her teammates. She also plays volleyball and basketball, but softball is her sport, and moving to the next level in softball is a big priority; and she wants to gain every advantage she can.

"I really want to play in college,'' she said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to get a scholarship.''

Indeed, all four girls have been into softball for quite some time -- Silva since she was six, Holiday and Maris since they were seven, and Dias since she was nine.

"My dad got me into playing tee ball, and I loved it,'' said Holiday, who'll be entering her senior year. "I just really got into it, and I kept playing.''

And she wants to keep doing so after high school, as do Silva and Dias.

Fagundes describes the three players as quiet.

"It's good, because that way you know they're listening,'' Fagundes said.

The easygoing Maris, the Bullpups' ace pitcher, has plenty more on her plate than softball -- literally. She's interested in entering the culinary field, as well as playing the guitar.

In fact, she said her goal is to work as a chef in Las Vegas -- a spot once frequented by one of her favorite recording artists, Elvis Presley. Another favorite of hers is Motley Crue.

"I'm the team rocker,'' she quipped.

But the senior isn't ruling out doing a bit of rocking and rolling on the softball diamond in college.

"Maybe if there's a good offer, I won't go to culinary school,'' she said with a chuckle.

Fagundes is proud that four players from his team were selected.

"There were 13 girls picked [at Clovis],'' he said, "and four of them are from our school,'' he said.

Holiday and Maris are developing into leaders as they inch closer to their senior seasons in high school, the coach said; and Dias and Silva, he added, are hard-nosed performers.

"J.D.'s a gamer,'' Fagundes said. "She works hard all the time. Jasmine's the same way as J.D. When we run sprints, she's always up there in front.''

Fagundes said some money has already been raised to help the girls fund their trip, but added that other fundraisers are planned.

" Dear FAN and anyone else out there with inquisitive minds. The Hanford High Softball team has been playing A tournaments for the last 3 years. This A team consists of girls that are already playing for Hanford High with the intent to make their high school team better. This team is strickly a team made up of Hanford High players, not players that are hand picked living in different towns. This is a unique program that many other A & B coaches don't give enough credit to, but when it comes down to it, they don't want to play them either. So FAN if you really are a fan the answer to your question is; it was an A tournament in Clovis. if you are one of the many coaches that always has something to say about this team, why can't you just give credit where credit is due!! These players and coaches work hard. I know i'm the wife. If you want more information or would like to donate to these outstanding players, donations are being accepted by the Hanford High Softball Boosters, you can contact me/or any Booster member. "

NOT A COACHPARENT wrote on Jul 2, 2008 9:50 AM:

" I thought a team consisted of at least 9 players. It is great that these girls were selected, but it sounds like there are only four girls playing on this summer softball team. How many of the other girls put in as much practice time and do not get the playing time or accolades. Again congratulations to the four girls, but what about the rest of the team? "

Ladypup Fan wrote on Jul 2, 2008 6:30 PM:

" There are some good tournaments like this out there for the girls...just make sure it is not one that is mainly just for someone to make money on with a large fee for the girls to attend, then there are only some no name college recruits there except for a couple big name ones. They give a couple of big name coaches a free trip to show up. I heard they charge up to $700.00 per girl, which is a entry fee to be a the team for the one tournament. As far as "A" or "B" both are good...."A" gets you up to tournaments ( Stockton, LA, etc.) to where the girls are playing in front of "Division I" recruits many times in the different age divisions through their career. Like I said both are good experiences for the girls...and "B" is defiantly easier on the parents wallet and the local Hanford Flames does a great job fundraising. Hope all works out well and Go Pups! "

" Without knowing you, I would say you are a parent. Being around sports in general for a while, I know it's hard for some parents to really see the potential of their own children. The sad part is that when they don't see correctly they make excuses or blame the coaches or any others available. The way I read this article is that these 4 girls will join other California girls to make 2 teams. Parent, show by example, give praise to the girls expecially around your child. Do not feel that other players didn't get enough praise or playing time. Your child could be next to be choosen for something (maybe not softball) but something just as important and you would want people to acknowledge her as well as these parents want recognition for their children. Live is good enjoy it with a smile. "

NOT A COACHPARENT wrote on Jul 3, 2008 1:10 PM:

" To the individual that responded to my post. You caught me, I am a parent, who happens to live in Lemoore, and the father of 2 boys. So I am impartial to Softball. Obviously you missed the point of my post. First I congratulated the girls, and yes there is no offense in them being praised for their selection. But rather the article and most of the posts are only about the 4 girls/parents. How many other girls are on the team, how much efort/fees did they also put into so that these 4 girls are able to showcase their talents. Yet not a single mention to the efforts of the other girls. I have yet been to a game where one team puts only 4 players on the field. "

" I would like to hear the answer to that question....The parent is right I have yet to see a team with just 4 players on it as well..... "

Avenal Resident wrote on Jul 4, 2008 4:43 PM:

" As I read these quotes, I have a hard time believing that "not a parent/coach" and "answer" don't get the concept of what this article was about. These 4 Hanford High players were selected to go play on one of the California teams. It didn't say that only 4 would be on the team, they are just the 4 from this area. The other 8 playes are probably being promoted in their home town newspapers, I just hope those reading those other papers get it!! I hope next year, I get to read that 4 more Hanford High players, or Hanford West or Lemoore or Avenal players are selected to go. I'm sure it will cost to get them over there, nothing is free, but jeez get off the soap box on who DIDN'T get to go and lets wait to see how their team did when they get back. I for one hope at least one of the California teams win!! "

To Ladypup Fan wrote on Jul 4, 2008 4:56 PM:

" I understand your warning about these girls going to Hawaii might just be a money making issue, but isn't all organized sports?? Little League charges $80 to play, Baberuth is $75, Youth Softball is $55, Football is $75. and the price may go up if your child is selected to play all stars. These travel baseball, softball, football, soccer teams aren't cheap either. Some of the Clovis team charge over $1000. I know to play on the "A" softball team that consists of only Hanford High players was $180. My neice plays on the team. No she wasn't selected to go to Hawaii, but probably because she is only a sophomore and isn't as developed a player as they are. Honestly I have watched the team, and they are all good players, but this USA team was looking for position players and they are the best at those positions. This summer team is still playing (including the 4) until the end of July. So what I mean to say, is all extra curricular activities for kids these day cost money. That's just the way it is. "

" Just wondering if a local high school team playing together is a violation of rules? Working out with the high school coach only, is the CIF listening? By the way, stop shoowing your lack of intelligence and not capitalize everything you say, make sit harder to read! "

PARENT wrote on Jul 7, 2008 5:59 PM:

" My bad! I capitalize when I comment, Its my eyes, I can read it better, sorry "just wondering". Travel team and Hanford High team are two different teams coached by the same coach. Its a great thing to do to better your program and its alot cheaper! Our daughter could play for any of the out of town travel teams and has in the past, but, this is so much nicer. No Politics. No, its not against any rules, we are actually intelligent enough to make sure we didnt break any CIF rules. Thanks for the comment and interest in our girls, we appreciate your acknowledgement of our lack of intellegence that must make you feel so intelligent. Try and express positive encouragement it might make yourself feel better. Go ladypups! Double header tonight in Clovis, come check them out at Buchannon High School. I apoligize in advance for my writing skills. PEACE TO ALL. "

to just wondering wrote on Jul 8, 2008 12:03 PM:

" I don't think playing together during the summer is a violation of rules. I believe baseball has done it thru Baberuth for years, basketball has been running a summer program for the past few years and there is a league in Clovis that is only for high school players coached by their high school coach. I think if this was a violation Hanford High would be in trouble long ago. I believe what they call it is "building a program". I really like reading the different comments, and yes the capital letters are harder to read, but some people type better that way. I for one will keep reading... "

Helper..eh you get it wrote on Jul 8, 2008 6:23 PM:

" Ok. I would like to congratulate the four girls that were recognized. I know them very well, and i know that they are all well rounded players. The fact that four were selected from just this team is amazing to me. I was not there on this day but i know there performance is always 100%. To the rest of the team; Just because you weren't selected doesn't mean you were not good enough. If anything my mind set would be that I am going to show up those girls that were picked. "
