Futrell and Brownfield to fight in main event

LEMOORE -- Don Juan Futrell, who won a hard-fought bout with Valley standout Hector Alatorre at the Tachi Palace last December, will try for his second big win at the Casino tonight when he faces Lowell Brownfield in a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout.

Futrell (21-3-1, 10 knockouts) will gun for his seventh consecutive victory. The St. Louis fighter also owns a win over heralded Hector Camacho Jr.

But Futrell's opponent figures to be tough one. Brownfield (10-4, 3 KOs) lost a controversial decision to Alatorre and won one over Juan Herrera in two of the more exciting bouts in Palace history.

Brownfield, who is from Omaha, Neb., but now lives in San Fernando, has lost two of his last three bouts. But both were decisions to fighters with solid records -- Eddie Brooks (7-1) and Ramon Montano (15-5).

Tonight's show, scheduled for 6 p.m., will include 10 boxing matches and two mixed-martial arts bouts.

In a scheduled 10-round co-feature, Las Vegas cruiserweight Dewey Coopeer (16-1-2, 10 KOs) meets Missouri's Terrance Smith (5-6-1, 3 KOs).

One of the preliminaries will feature former USA amateur great Aaron Alafa (1-0) of Visalia against Greg McDowell (0-0) of Cambria.

The show is scheduled to begin at approximately 6 p.m.

In other scheduled bouts:

--Caleb Truax (6-0, 4 KOs) of Osseo, Minn. vs. Thomas Rittenbaugh (3-1-2) of Las Vegas, six rounds, super middleweights.

--Rico Ramos (3-0, 2 KOs) of Los Angeles vs. Harvey Phillips (0-4) of Cleveland, super bantamweights.

--James Ventry (5-4,-1, 4 KOs) of Niagara Falls, N.Y. vs. Kelly Wright (4-5) of St. Louis, six rounds, junior welterweights,

--Tony Hirsch (5-1-1, 2 KOs) of Oakland vs. Mustapha Johnson (5-4-1, 2 KOs) of Indianapolis, four rounds, middleweights.

--Mike Dallas (2-0) of Bakersfield, vs. Christopher Finley (0-0) of Detroit, four rounds, junior welterweights.

--Ana Julaton (3-0) of San Francisco vs. Salina Jordan (2-4, 1 KO) of Denver, four rounds, super bantamweights.

Lorenzo Davis (0-0) vs. Maurice Wilson (1-5-1, 1 KO) of Wilson, N.C., four rounds, heavyweights.

MMA bouts will feature Hanford's Luis Gonzalez ad Las Vegas' David Smith.

" I was there for the fights last night and this fight and the cruiserweight fight was a "Joke" to be considered a "Draw". Both of the favorites lost easily and the crowd showed their displeasure with the judging, especially the same judge who called them a draw. This was a ploy used in the old days of boxing so that the favorite would at least get a "Draw". As Teddy Atlas says "We need a Commissioner (an honest one) in boxing. The call on these two fights spoiled the rest of the evening. I hope Christian will learn from this and find better judges. I was highly disappointed. "

38 Things

I know, I know. It’s been a long time. But I’m back on the blogs again and thanks to my coverage of education I’ve got something to say in light of tomorrow’s holiday. (haha, I rhyme, and get ready, because this is going to be cheesy). So, in school, the teachers typically have their students write [...]

Faith in the ruins

I interviewed an 85-year-old woman on Monday. I will surely never hear “young man” as much as I did for the hour I talked with Merry Loo. “Young man,” she said. “Go out there and find a wife.” Go out and find a wife. Procreate. Buy a house. Be civic minded. Treat people with fairness, honesty and [...]

Fearful Football Forecast: Week 12

Are some of these leagues getting so predictable that even I can predict them right? I was just doing last week’s totals and can’t believe I again nailed just about all of them. The one miss, the Cowboys, of course. I generally haven’t fared well in these things at other papers, seriously! 13-1 again, now [...]

The poison of ideology

Ideology is often the bane of this blog. I say this at the risk of alienating some of the most frequent commentators. But it needs to be said: Ideology is one of the great poisons of the modern age, remnants of which survive into the postmodern world we now live in. For evidence, just read some of the [...]
