Groundwater being pumped into aqueduct

FRESNO -- State water officials say they're making available more water for drought-stricken farms in the San Joaquin Valley by pumping groundwater into the California Aqueduct.

The temporary move allows water from wells within the Westlands Water District to be transferred to customers inside the district's service area that don't have groundwater.

Also Tuesday, the giant Metropolitan Water District of Southern California announced it would lend 25,000 acre-feet of water to state and federal water contractors.

Valley farmers say they've been forced to plow under thousands of acres of crops this year due to court-ordered water cutbacks to protect a threatened fish species.
