Charges dropped against arson suspects

The two Laton volunteer firefighters arrested earlier this week on suspicion of involvement in over 30 fires in the Kings and Fresno counties area over the past year were released on Wednesday afternoon when prosecutors claimed not to have enough evidence to file charges against them.

Christopher Furtado, 27, of Hanford and Teddy Lee, 23, of Laton, were both released from custody when officials with the Fresno County District Attorney's Office claimed that there was insufficient evidence in the case to proceed to trial, according to multiple media sources.

Prior to this announcement, Furtado allegedly posted bail to be released, while Lee was let out of the Fresno County Jail amidst a flurry of reporters, where he refused to comment on the allegations against him.

The two are suspects in more than 30 fires that have occurred in and around the Laton area, including the Kings Country Club fire that caused the destruction of the golf course's clubhouse.

Investigators with the Kings County Sheriff's office are still working to determine if there is a connection to the Kings Country Club fire. When contacted this morning, Assistant Sheriff Brian Wheat said only that the "investigation still continues" and that they were still assisting with the case.

When asked if the release of the two men would be a setback in the investigation, Kings County Fire Chief Jim Kilner expressed confidence in his team.

"If these guys are bad, then we will get everything situated and make an arrest that will stick," Kilner said. "If not, if we find out they didn't do it, well, then OK. But I'm pretty sure we are going in the right direction and I still have confidence in our investigators."

The Kings County Sheriff's Department, in addition to the Kings County Fire Department and the Fresno County Fire Prevention District, are jointly looking into the case at this time.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

" I guess alot of people owe these two young men a second look huh? From what i hear they were released because there was no proof of it being them setting the fires. let me know if i am wrong on this one. This just shows that we all accuse everyone, even the people that didn't do it. "

" goes to show ya that Fresno knows what they are doing. Kings County would have built the gallows by now. These guys will never be the same now. I've been there. "

" NOW that they have been totally maligned in the media and tried and convicted in the minds of many people, they are released. What are they to go back to? Ostracism and getting fired? Attacks on their children at school who will be mocked by other children? Why not establish probable cause BEFORE exposing people to such public ridicule? "

" maybe there wasn't enough evidence to file criminal charges YET, but i'm sure there will be. It's just a matter of time. I highly doubt these two were arrested and booked for mere suspiscion. There may be evidence that has not yet been analized. Dont feel too sorry for these guys. "

Mom wrote on Jul 25, 2008 9:00 AM:

" Kings county arrested them on suspicion, if they had not of been transferred to Fresno, they would of still been sitting in Kings county wasting our tax payers money. If they are the ones who set the fire they will get caught, but now, we might never know who set the fires, due to Kings County always jumping the gun!!!!! "

" WOW, Kigs County Finest at work agein, So, are they going to make another "Dave Hawk" out of these guys and do WHATEVER they have to, to make charges to save face? "

BJMallory wrote on Jul 26, 2008 9:37 AM:

" Here's what I find "fishy" - why were the mug shots of these men printed online for all to see? How many times are the mugshots of accused criminals posted with the online articles detailing the crimes they are accused of committing?

I don't know these men, I have no opinion on whether they are innocent or guilty. I just think if the Sentinel is going to publish mugshots of accused criminals they shouldn't be selective - publish them all or publish none. "

" If these men were not involved just wait until their lawyer gets finished with the police departments. It won't be pretty. "

ANDY wrote on Aug 5, 2008 12:59 AM:

" JUST BECAUSE THEY GOT RELEASED DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY DIDN'T DO IT. THEY GOT ARRESTED DIDN'T THEY? THERE STILL IS A CHANCE THAT THEY DID IT. THE INVESTIGATORS ON THIS CASE ARE TOP OF THE LINE. AN NO, IT ISN'T A DAVE HAWK DEAL. AND BESIDES, THE INVESTIGATORS INVOLVED IN THIS FIRE CASE ARE FIRE INVESTIGATORS AND NOT THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ONES THAT ARE DEALING WITH HAWKS CASE. SO BEFORE YOU START TALKING, IT MIGHT BE BEST IF YOU KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON. "
