No evidence ties pair to country club fire

The two Laton volunteer firefighters jailed and released this week on suspicion of starting more than 30 fires in and around the Laton area have been cleared of any connection to the clubhouse fire at the Kings Country Club -- for the time being.

"At this time, we don't have any individual that we are specifically looking at," Kings County Assistant Fire Chief Mike Virden said this morning. "I'm not going to connect these guys to it, but we're not exonerating them either. It's still under investigation."

Arrested on Monday was Teddy Lee, 23, of Laton and Christopher Furtado, 27, of Hanford on separate charges of arson. However, the charges were dropped and the pair released on Wednesday, when the Fresno County District Attorney's office claimed there was insufficient evidence in the case to proceed to trial.

No charges in the case have been filed in Kings County.

"I don't want to give the impression that they didn't do it, but we just don't have that information," Virden said. "Right now, we are gathering a totality of information that will develop into leads. We will continue to pursue this matter."

The Kings Country Club fire occurred the evening of July 7, causing more than $750,000 in damages to the golf course clubhouse undergoing renovations at the time. The clubhouse was a building on the old Hanford High School campus.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

" IM CONFIDENT THAT FRESNO COUNTY DA'S OFFICE WILL DO WHATS RIGHT WHETHER THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE INNOCENT OR GUILTY.... FOR THOSE OTHERS WHO ARE JUMPING THE GUN DO EVERYONE A FAVOR AND SAVE TAX DOLLARS,ETC AND DONT MAKE ARREST UNTIL THERE IS SUFFICENT EVIDENCE... "

" Why don't these investigators get their act together before they acuse people of a crime without having done their homework. Worse yet, they release this to the news media to make headlines prematurely.
Most people can not imagine what it is like to be arrested, booked and allowed to sit in a jail cell for something they did not do! It is in itself inhumane! They will never be able to erase this experience from their minds. These young men are doing a VOLUNTEER job for which they probably get very little thanks for their efforts to support the community with their labors to help fight fires. I doubt they will feel the same about their community involvement when this is all over and they are cleared of all charges. "

" I guess they put magic handcuff's on these two. Now you see them and now you don't. Maybe you shouldn't make an arrest until you have enough evidence. I sure would not want my freedom taken from me if there was not enough evidence to prosecute me. Just a thought. "

" I know these two young men, and it is ashame how the media, can make them look like beast! Believe me they are NOT!!! The people that are wanting to blame these volunteers need to get a life!! You shouldn't post and talk about these 2 men, if the facts weren't their on the table!!! "
