Marijuana bust in bank parking lot

The Hanford Bank of America almost received a hefty deposit of marijuana on Thursday afternoon when two local residents apparently pulled into the parking lot with a quarter pound of weed in their car.

Hanford police officers pulled over two men in a red Ford Thunderbird just before 4 p.m. as they entered the Redington and Seventh streets Bank of America parking lot. The officers, who had been driving behind the pair, noticed that the vehicle registration was expired and flashed their emergency lights to prompt the stop.

The occupants of the vehicle, 26-year-old Alexander Scott and Merlin Watson Jr., 23, both of Hanford, were found to be unlicensed drivers and reportedly gave consent to officers to search their vehicle, which was due to be towed for the infraction.

When the passenger and driver's side doors were opened, the inside door panel of each fell out onto the concrete. It is unclear at this time whether the doors had been loosened to aid in drug concealment, or if "it was a piece of junk car and parts were just falling off of it," said Officer Chris Barker, interviewed after the incident.

Officers reportedly detected a strong smell of marijuana inside the vehicle and soon located in the back seat a quarter pound bag of marijuana that had not been concealed.

Both suspects were arrested at the scene without incident and the vehicle was towed away. Scott and Watson were booked into the Kings County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale and transportation of marijuana.

According to jail officials on Friday afternoon, Watson posted bail and was released from custody, while Scott is still being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

Drugs in baggie on back seat in plain sight;

Smell of Mary Jane wafting about inside of vehicle.

And some people think our educational system is NOT in a crisis?

Well, the boys will make good use of that new criminal Re-Entry facility that's gonna be built right here in our beautiful city.

" This takes place every day... Im glad they busted these low lives, but this isnt really news worthy. Other agencies are pulling pounds of marijuana off the street daily, yet HPD gets a little and its a new flash.

Marijuana is being abuse state wide, thanks to crooked DRs who are signing off on bogus medical excuses, so teenagers can claim their marijuana is for medicinal use. The medicinal marijuana law was passed on the thought only terminally ill or seriously injured people will be able to use marijuana. However it's turned into a farce, and perfectly healthy people are getting medical marijuana cards, from hippy DR's and totally abusing the law. Only in California can one be told it's ok to break a federal law ... "

This isn't 1920 educate yourself people. The only reason pot is illegal is because Mr. Hearst ( you know hearst castle) racial smear campaign in his newspaper against marijuana. So he could get hemp paper off the market by making claims marijuana excited blacks into killing white people. That black people couldn't be controlled on marijuana. Actually Alan I think a confession written out in this nature is simply lacking a signature in order for it to be a lawful admission of guils, punishable to the full extent of the law. Perhaps Oracle can answer that question from a professional point of view and clearly indicate the enforceability of the law under these circumstances. I am sure though with a clear cut identity and signature a prosecution could take place. What say you Oracle? "

WATCHDOG FRED BITES BACK wrote on Aug 15, 2008 6:47 AM:

It makes me wonder if we didn't have all these laws if we wouldn't be living in the time of the old west. Where criminals and hero's both wore guns and settled things in the middle of the street with the sun at their backs.
Liberals are usually very liberal when it comes to the law so with some of what Alan G has had to say his present remarks don't alarm or surprise me. What surprises me is Dose' and Jeff so willing to brag about their escapades on a public forum, that totally blows me away. Like there aren't cops watching, like they can't figure out who they are and their continued bragging wouldn't justify a judge to provide a warrant to obtain their real identities. Stranger things have been known to happen in Kings County, just ask the former City Manager's. One thing about criminals and I think Oracle will agree with this is they are not subject to a lack of paranoia. Many weed distributors see cops everywhere. "

" Prescribed marijuana is not illegal in the state of CA.

There are many people who have your accepted reduction theory of the effectiveness of marijuana. You like many have a valid point, it probably isn't more dangerous than alcohol, but why should we as a society unleash another killer on the street when Alcohol is sufficient in it's own right. Why should we take the chance that those using marijuana are gonna stay out of vehicles and not run over and kill our citizens. If you set there and tell me you have total control when under the influence of the product, then I am gonna tell you that is exactly the reason it needs to remain illegal. Because the high from it is giving you and others a false sense of security and confidence in your abilities that simply aren't present. There have been studies on this that prove what I am saying is right, your reflexes are slower to respond just like on alcohol, your judgement is affected in degrees you don't even realize. Say no to legalization! "

WATCHDOG FRED wrote on Aug 15, 2008 7:26 AM:

" I stand corrected Randolph Hearest did print a series of articles regarding Marijuana, but I found nowhere the statement you made regardling blacks killing whites. I think perhaps you added that for a flair of negativeness about Hearst.
His comments were not different from many of that era and in tune with the feelings of the people at the time. I see nothing wrong in what he did.
Furthermore the hemp for paper information you provided was discovered three decades earier and already being used by Hearst. So that blows that myth out of the water as well, it wasn't anything he manufactured or discovered as you pretend.
But I do concede to not knowing he launched this campaign as a responsible editor of his day and he did take a special intereste into keeping marijuana illegal and was backed by Prison Wardens, Correctional Officers, Medical Physicians and many politicians at the time. Not any different than it is today.
Marijuana is illegal and will remain illegal for all the right reasons. Protest as you like but it will not change the outcome at the courts. So you lose. "

Pickle wrote on Aug 15, 2008 10:30 AM:

" Fred I was saying that hemp paper was threatening his market hold on mill/timber produced paper. He had huge stock in making hemp/marijuana illegal so that his mills could maintain the prosperity they had. Hemp paper was just starting to compete with his mills around the time of his smear campaign. Fred I can find sources for tons of items listed about how he did "yellow journalism" quoting how blacks who abused marijuana where at high risk of raping white women, and it contributed to the rise in satanic music(that is now called Jazz) and so on and so on. He renamed it from canabis and gave it a foreign name of marijuana to scare the general public. It was known as canabis hundreds of years before this.

Straight from wiki
"Jack Herer and others argue that Hearst's paper empire (he owned hundreds of acres of timber forests and a vast number of paper mills designed to manufacture paper from wood pulp) in the early 1930s was threatened by hemp," "

Pickle wrote on Aug 15, 2008 10:33 AM:

" Also from wiki
Between 1936 and 1937, Hearst associated marijuana with hemp in his newspapers[10] and published many of the stories that Anslinger fabricated. Those fabricated stories include many stories how blacks committed horendous crimes generally involving white people because of marijuana.

I agree people shouldn't drive on marijuana but its happening anyways. I think it should be legalized and controlled just like alcohol. Teens these days have an easier time buying pot off the street then they can get alcohol in my opinion again. Regulate it pass laws and stop spending billions on arresting simple pot users--unless they are driving high. "

Pickle wrote on Aug 15, 2008 10:34 AM:

Through his relentless misinformation campaign, Hearst is credited with bringing the word marijuana into the English language. In addition to fueling racist attitudes toward Hispanics, Hearst papers run articles about marijuana-crazed negroes raping white women and playing voodoo-satanic jazz music.

Driven insane by marijuana, these blacks -- according to accounts in Hearst-owned newspapers -- dared to step on white men's shadows, look white people directly in the eye for more than three seconds, and even laugh out loud at white people. For shame! "

I think my history of posts on crime and punishment clearly demonstrate that. How you can make such a huge leap from my post that you quoted, completely baffles me. Standing on the rooftops and screaming "LIBERAL!!!!" based on that three sentence post shows a complete lack of comprehension skills.

Let me say the same thing in simpler terms... Given Dose's age and the likelihood that what he did took place probably well over 10 years ago, I seriously doubt any law enforcement agency would deem such a statement worthy of their time and efforts to pursue. Your scenario with confessions and signatures is a bit out there and that's an opinion free of any liberal or conservative bias. Clear, simple and logical. I'm sure those FBI agents with all there wisdom are searching far and near for the medicnal pot user in cali. . LoL I hope they are better serving their time catching terrorists. I'm not misleading anyone. Law is law whether you like it or not. Yes its a federal illegal drug only enforcable by "federal" police. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember you that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

So as many of you sit there and ponder the legalization of this drug and that is what it is a drug. You might want to think twice after reading what I've posted. This is not yellow journalism it is facts based on research many of you didn't care to look into before commenting. "

You said:

" Prescribed marijuana is not illegal in the state of CA."

I do indeed know the California laws dealing with health care providers and physician prescriptions based upon my experience working in that industry.

You didn't prove that marijuana is legal. I showed you that it was patently illegal. There is no such thing as a valid physician's PRESCRIPTION for marijuana.

In CA. , a physicians PRESCRIPTION must have his/her printed Federal DEA Control number and no doctor will risk violating Federal Scheduled (Controlled) Drug Laws by actually writing a prescription for a Schedule I (C-I) drug.

I showed you here, in my previous post, marijuana is a Schedule I drug. Illegal under federal law. Marijuana is not legal in CA. One is always at risk of violating Federal law. And one can be DUI from marijuana regardless if he drives while impaired, no matter what kind of marijuana ID card he has.

And who says only a Federal law enforcement officer can arrest someone for violating a Federal law?

We all have to obey federal law, no matter what state we live in. "
