Ex-Lemoore cop accused in burglary

A former Lemoore police officer was arrested on Tuesday afternoon when Hanford police investigators linked the man to a weekend burglary at the Skybox Sports Bar & Grill, according to an official report. Jeffrey James McCabe, now a 35-year-old technician, was arrested in the 1100 block of Manor Avenue when evidence from the crime scene and leads developed during the investigation pointed to the former lawman as a possible suspect in the case. McCabe has also been involved in ownership and operation at the restaurant.

The Skybox restaurant in the historic Hanford Courthouse was broken into on Saturday around 5 a.m. and approximately $1,273 was stolen during the burglary. Police investigators have not yet recovered the property stolen during the crime.

McCabe was booked into the Kings County Jail on suspicion of a felony count of burglary, but posted his $15,000 bail and was released that same day.

An investigation into the burglary is still ongoing at this time.

McCabe previously appeared in the news in 2002, when a voluntary manslaughter suit was filed against him in the shooting death of a Hanford man who apparently engaged in a struggle with the officer during a routine traffic stop. When suspect Peter Contreras, 24, climbed back into his vehicle, McCabe shot him once in the chest and killed him.

It was later ruled by a Kings County Superior Court judge that McCabe was acting in self-defense when he fired his weapon and that the charges against the man would be dismissed.

Following this ruling, the family of the victim filed a wrongful death suit in U.S. District Court naming the City of Lemoore, Police Chief Kimberly Morrell, and Officer Jeffrey McCabe as responsible for their loss.

McCabe also claimed to have suffered emotional distress and financial loss during these proceedings and filed a claim against the county for his trouble, which was then rejected by the Board of Supervisors.

McCabe was employed with the Lemoore Police Department from 1999 until 2007, when he submitted his resignation.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

" From what I hear the Hanford PD detectives made a to quick of an arrest. Jeff McCabe went to the police deparment on his own free will and gave a statement. No evidence was recovered from his residence. The stuff that was taken didn't even match from the scene. The Hanford Police made a bad arrest. I know Jeff all to well for him to even think of doing something like this. "

" Probably just recovering some of what they owe him. "

He just recovered a felony. "

" aparently you dont know him as well as you think, or you would know excatly why jeff is no longer a partner or even welcomed at the skybox, he actually owes them more than you can ever imagine. he should of left well enogh alone, and be grateful that they let him walk away the way they did. "

" It is a shame that this has happened. Just shows you to be careful who u can trust. Even some lawmen active and inactive go to the wayside. Some are still employed as peace officers. Good luck to the Skybox. "

" First things first. Just because someone is arrested doesn't mean that they are guilty. You hear alot of things, as our town is full of drama. Comming from a reliable source I hear that the Hanford PD didn't have much to make the arrest on Jeff McCabe as it was a quick decision on very little circumstatual evidence. It would be nice to have the Hanford Sentinel for one time research the articles before posting. "

" Your absolutely right "BB" just because some is arrested doesnt mean they are guilty, And someone who says they are a "Reliable source" doesnt mean they are.Like "Probably" says....in times of need and desperation, people do unbelievable things" even those closest to us. "

Joe Johnson wrote on Aug 13, 2008 10:29 AM:

" To BB: What additional research are you looking for? We do not have access to the criminal case files and can only rely on the information given to us by the police department making the arrest. Perhaps have your "reliable source" give me a call and maybe we can dig a little deeper. "

dose wrote on Aug 13, 2008 4:47 PM:

" I guess you only get presumption of innocence in Kings County if your a cop. People here were ready to string Clint Calhoun up the minute his name was mentioned. "

to BB wrote on Aug 13, 2008 6:03 PM:

" In order for the police to make an arrest they need enough evidence. I am sure they required alot of evidence, espically since he was a former police officer. Even though he was from another city there is still the brotherhood. Have you ever heard of a police officer issueing another police officer a ticket? Their personnel license plates come back as law enforcement. The officer already knows he has pulled over a law enforcement officer. Check your reliable source, he probably isn't so reliable. Or maybe he is a lieable source. "

Bobb wrote on Aug 13, 2008 10:28 PM:

" To "to BB". Yes I have. My son is a PD officer in another city, lives in Hanford and received a no seat belt ticket in Hanford. He was wrong, admitted it as he had just gone around the block, and accepted the ticket. He will be attending driving school to keep it off of his DMV record. Yes, it happens. "

Bad Boys wrote on Aug 13, 2008 11:33 PM:

" Even real cops go bad. Watch the news and you will see. Sorry to hear it was him. "

Tired wrote on Aug 15, 2008 8:14 PM:

" I'm sick and tired of hearing people say " So & So was falsely arrested. . . there's no evidence. . . blah, blah, blah. Everytime someone gets arrested and put in jail the case gets reviewed by a judge. If the judge finds enough "evidence" or probable cause, the case moves forward through the judicial process. If the judge does not find enough "evidence" the suspect gets released. I haven't heard "Jeff's judge dismissing the case, and the same goes for the Hawk murder case. Must have been some type of evidence for a judge not to dismiss the case. "

To Tired wrote on Aug 19, 2008 1:49 PM:

" First of all you no so little about the judicial system. The only time the judge would review the case is unless Jeff was arrested and booked over the weekend. The judge hasn't even seen the case because nothing has been filed with the D.A.'s Office. Do people get arrested with little to no evidence absolutely. It's up to the D.A.'s office to review the officers report and see if there is enough evidence for further prosecution. The case is then sent to a preliminary hearing. "

skybox friend wrote on Aug 20, 2008 6:41 AM:

" circumstancial evidence BB? Just when does finger prints, video survelience and and eye witness account become circumstancial evidence? Its a sad day when one of our friends does something we are ashamed of, but come on dont blame the HPD for jumping the gun on this. I know that it was very hard on them to arrest a former "brother". Jeff needs to own up to his problems. "
