Chin, Sorensen outpace other Council candidates in cash war

Hanford City Councilman Dan Chin is easily raising more money than his District C challengers, and in District B, Sue Sorensen has a definitive edge in campaign cash raised so far, according to new reports. These campaign finance reports were filed with city hall last week by all candidates running for District C and B of the city council. All but two collected or spent more than $1,000. Only John Murrisky, one of four candidates running for District B, and Richard Douglas, running in District C, filed a so-called "short form" claiming contributions and expenditure were under $1,000.

Chin, a two-term incumbent seeking another term, raised $10,814 in a period covering Jan. 1-Sept. 30 -- a significant amount for a small-town city council election. That's nearly seven times as much as what was raised by his opponent Mike Spicer. Chin far outpaces Douglas in the cash war with easily 10 times more money in his campaign war chest.

Chin's largest contributor this period was Ajner Singh Nahal, owner of Shah's Chevron station, who donated $2,000. The second largest donation came from the Kings County Board of Realtors' political action committee, or PAC, at $1,500. Chin raised money from a diverse set of Hanford interests, including $250 from Jim Olivas, a real estate broker; $250 from Fashion Cleaners; $200 from Valley Ford and $100 from Chuck Forsythe, an insurance firm owner.

His spending has totaled $4,757, of which $1,327 went to a fundraising dinner at Purple Potato and the rest went to postage and other campaign materials.

Chin's statement shows that he has paid $435 to his sister Sandra Dawson, who also acts as his treasurer for campaign work. He also has an unpaid bill of $4,494 to his own business, Buddy's Trophy, and $796 to Dawson for campaign paraphernalia, the statement shows.

Spicer has so far raised $1,590, which comes from his own pocket, and he has expended $1,504 in signs, postage, advertising and shipping, according to his campaign form.

In District B, Sorensen leads the campaign cash war with a total contribution of $6,456, including a $500 loan to herself. She has so far spent $4,378 in advertisements, printing of campaign materials and postage, according to her report. Top contributors to Sorensen's campaign include William Matts of Fresno, her father, who donated $500, and Danny Todd of Bacome Insurance, who donated $500. She also received $250 from the Kings County Board of Realtors PAC and Michael Robinson of Robinson's Interiors Carpet One.

Jon-Michael Hice, another District B candidate, has raised $1,050, including a loan to himself of $900 and a $100 contribution from former city councilman Dennis Sanchez. He has spent $967 in campaign materials.

Robin Mattos, who is also running for District B, has raised $1,646, including a $576 loan from her husband Andrew Mattos and $670 in contributions. Contributions include $100 from James and Jean Leonard, retirees, and $100 from Mel Avila, a retiree. She has so far spent $1,246 in fundraising, campaign literature printing and advertisements, her statement shows.

" The red flag originally raised by Mr. Spicer has again raised it's ugly head today as I look at Mr. Chin's financial statement. He says Buddy's Trophy is owed $4,494.00 his sister is collecting in excess of $1,200.00 addiding up to $5,694.00 of his campaign funds. What possibly could Buddy's Trophy be contributing to the campaign to the tune of almost $5,000.00? Sounds to me like $4,494.00 was just funneled into the pocket of Mr. Chin. I also question who his integrity and alliance will be besides these excessive contributors come November 5, 2008? You also have to wonder when he says he will be vital in the growth plan in the community, wouldn't all the money from local realtors be considered a conflict of interest? They even refer to them as a Pac we all know what that means on the Federal Level, special interest, right! I think the incumbent should rethink who he should take money from without causing a conflict of interest, in transacting his duties as a City Council Member. You mean to say that he didn't disclose any donations from Marcie Buford his longtime friend? Surprising. "

" That cash means nothing to me! I think Hanford is tired of the same-ole, same-ole from the crooked city council and we just want new people in. Let them do some good work before they get jaded too. "

" $2,000 to Chinn (or was it Chin?) please help me on this, from Shah at Shah's Chervon. Sounds like a front for some 'slilent" contributors. Kermit the frog. You're being too polite on the city council. They are beyond crooked! Won't do any business at that businessman anymore! "

" I am outraged. I just got a Voter Information Guide, you know one of those "use this when you vote". It's Democrats all over it, Obama, Costa, Florez, and Sorensen for city council? It says she's supporting a "no" vote on Prop. 8. Those of us that feel strongly about Prop. 8 and family values will look at who is supporting a "yes" vote on Prop. 8 in this election. We supporters of Prop. 8 are all concerned about this important issue and will vote accordingly. We are very disappointed the Sentinel endorsed Sorensen for our city council. Is the Sentinel aware of her affiliation with those that support a "no" vote on prop. 8? We voters in Area B are. "

" Point of Information:

Voter Information Guides back candidates and propositions, not necessarily the other way around. It is not unusual to find candidates being recommended who don’t support positions taken by the guide offering support.

You can’t assume that because a Democratic Voter Information Guide supports Sue Sorensen that she believes as they do on other issues or that she supports the other candidates listed on the guide. Case in point, Sue Sorensen isn’t even a registered Democrat.

I can assume Sue supports what is on a voter guide Big John because she or someone in her camp bought it and paid for the "ad". I called to find out and was told she paid money to get on the mailer. She paid over $100 for that "ad". Then I confirmed she is a Republican, as I remember her from being on the Kings Co. Rep. Central Committee. Her co-chair is an assistant to Fran Florez. She shows her true "BLUE" colors now, she's a supporter of "No on Prop. 8", her mailer bought and paid for says it. Sorry, Area B. doesn't need the likes of Sue Sorenson. "

Delbert wrote on Oct 29, 2008 5:45 PM:

" Talk about advertising, have you seen the ads for Chin on Yahoo and Google? I can’t search for anything related to Hanford, the candidates or the election without his ad coming up 3 out of 4 times. Wow, how do they do that? "

Fence Sitter wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:45 PM:

" Delbert,

When your running a $11,000.00 plus campaign, with your lead donor being Shah from Shah's Cheveron at $2,000, you can do almost anything. "

Delbert wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:58 PM:

" Fence Sitter,
I guess so... but what a powerful use of financial support! When you have lots of contributors who believe in and fund a candidacy then almost anything is possible. Still, I'm really impressed by the technology. Somebody was thinking. "

" Wow, Dick Jacques is the Pres. of Kings. Co. Board of Realtor, he donated $1500 to both Sorensen and Chin. They've been bought and paid for it's pretty apparent. Those 2 should both go down as media policy gurus. What is the Sentinel thinking? Did they throw Chin under the bus so they could endorse Sorensen as a favor to Buford? Marcie really dislikes Chin so no loves lost between those 2. Choose wisely Hanford, your best bet is Spicer and Mattos. "

rocketman wrote on Oct 30, 2008 5:33 PM:

" I think the problem is Sorensen will get the "do not change" anything vote and the rest will be spread among the others and I will be stuck with sorensen. I definitely agree with Jasper but like Hice more. Those lawsuits still scare me a little too much. And I would vote for Spicer against Chin anyday. "

thetruth wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:44 PM:

" Chin, or Chinn or Chenn or whatever, with $11,000 spent on a city campaign is really running scared!!! Chin has outspent Mike Spicer 10 to 1. Chin's experience - he gets his Marching Orders from Dick Jacques aka the 6th council member and Jacques brags about it. Spicer has military experience(Marine), law enforcement experience, a Master in Business Administration, and is the Security Director for Kaiser with over 200 employees to supervise and handles a multi-million dollar budget; talk about being QUALIFIED!!!!!!!!!!! - Holly Cow I am glad he is not running against me, I would be running scared too. "

Delbert wrote on Oct 30, 2008 9:00 PM:

" I keep hearing that Spicer supervises 200 employees, yet I don't hear about any endorsing him or contributing to his campaign. We get the same story with members of his church. He served on the school board but doesn't have followers from there either. By definition to be a leader you must have (at least a couple) followers.. "

Carl.Spackler wrote on Oct 31, 2008 1:37 PM:

" Wow all it takes to "buy" a candidate is $1,500?

You conspiracy people need to get a life. "

Fence Sitter wrote on Oct 31, 2008 7:29 PM:

" Delbert,
After reading your comments about Chin paying for Meta tags to Google and Yahoo, I thought you were just a little slow on the tech side. But now I question your common sense. When does a candidate have to have their employees, church members or former educators support them monetarily? How rude. Dan Chin got the bulk of his money from special interests groups such as Shah from Shah’s Chevron and Dick Jacques of the Kings County Board of Realtors – Oh, I forgot, they must work for Dan Chin. Spicer does have followers: One is Dan Chin trailing in the polls! "
