Man beaten outside downtown Hanford bar

A Lemoore man was severely beaten by two men in the parking lot outside of the Sky Box Sports Bar & Grill early Saturday morning, Hanford police said. Police said Jesus Hernandez, 37, was found at 2:03 a.m. with injuries to his head and face after being punched and kicked several times by two men. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment.

Police Lt. George Hernandez said the motive for the attack is still under investigation.

"According to witnesses, the guy wasn't even doing anything," Hernandez said. "We don't have a clue what provoked this. They seemed to have jumped the guy for no reason at all."

Hospital officials could not confirm Jesus Hernandez's current medical condition on Monday afternoon, as he may have already been released from the facility. Lt. Hernandez said additional details could not be obtained regarding the case until the victim contacts law enforcement officers.

The suspects are described as two black men, one wearing a light blue T-shirt, sweater and beanie, while the other was wearing a black and gray sweater. Surveillance footage of the men was not immediately available.

Lt. Hernandez said incidents in the Sky Box and Bastille parking lot are usually less frequent at this time of year, usually peaking around the summer months.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Officer Steven Ring at the Hanford Police Department, 585-2540.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

Surely HPD is planning for this eventuality.

Are use permits being reviewed for possibly updating security requirements?

Is the parking area outside of the establishemnt(s) cited in past incidents owned by the City Of Hanford? "

" A few months ago didn't pretty much the same thing happen two or three times in a very short period...

Skybox owners defended themselves pretty good last time... (right?) but come on...enough is enough. If Skybox can't or won't accept blame or fault for even a little bit...then why is their name continuing to appear in these articles...

If they don't want the negative publicity, maybe they should step up security both indoors and out; to include and not limited to just the parking lots. And the other joints can chip in as well to help Skybox out with Security and such...

It’s obvious to me that I'll never go there; Mr. Loud mouth opinionated Blue Falcon would certainly upset someone there and next thing I'd remember is landing at the hospital in Fresno getting rolled to the trauma center, just to find out that I'd been rolled up by 4 or 5 punks!

Come on Skybox, I'm not saying you’re a bad place, but seriously, help clean up the negative opinion about yourself! "

" I am not defending the Skybox, I dont know if the attackers were patrons of the Skybox, Bastille, or maybe just walking through the parking lot from another establishment or even from or too their own homes. I dont know this because no where in the article does it say that they were leaving the Skybox after being served too much alcohol. We as readers just ASSUME the worse when the Skyboxs' name is mentioned. Is that fair? If you havent been there, go for lunch some Sunday watch a game or a race. See for yourself what a nice place it is. The food is probably some of the best in Hanford.Maybe if more of us "responsible" people frequented it, the owners would see that maybe they should change the type of atmosphere that has been created. "

" I really wouldn't blame the SkyBox itself.. the people that go there are the problem. All the local 20 somethings frequent the place and we all know the majority of young people around here arent doing anything productive with their lives so they go to the bar every weekend and get into trouble.. thats all there is to do around hanford, is get drunk or do drugs or both. Too many people in this area still act like they're in high school.. thats part of the problem! Now I'm not saying the whole 20 something local population is like this, but you can't deny that alot of them are! "

" It almost sounds to me like the "Guardian Angels" need to pay another visit to Hanford. I think especially the parking lots of the Bastille and Sky Box perhaps even a few members of the fight club could cruise on down and check out the safety of citizens.
It's a sad state of affairs when citizens can't pass through a parking lot without some disturbance breaking out and someone getting cut or shot.
In my navy the skipper would have ordered a dungaree party clean up after about the third episode of this nonsense and they would have solved the problem for the civilians. They would have shown up in working uniforms ready to work over any trouble makers who needed their assistance to behave like normal adults should. This is one that when the military threw it against the bulkhead it worked and it stuck and the problems ended quickly. "

" I would like to know what the City of Hanford/Hanford PD is going to do about the incident now. Are preventative measures being implemented to ensure this does not happen to other patrons of downtown Hanford bars? Personally, I do not plan to visit the downtown area after dark any time in the near future. I am concerned for the safety of myself and my loved ones because you just never know when this could happen to you.
This type of incident has been in the news all too often lately for our small, friendly City. Come on people, where's the love? "

skybox wrote on Feb 25, 2009 6:55 PM:

" All of the participants of this incident were in the Skybox on this evening. There were no problems or concerns during the night with the parties involved. As it is on almost every night, everyone had a great time in our establishment. For those who have not been here, we have a great atmoshpere and people come here because of it. It is not one of impending doom or violence as it has been portrayed by bad press. This article makes it sound like Mr. Hernandez was being beaten for a long period of time. I would estimate that the whole incident lasted less than a minute and it was our staff that broke it up and provided assistance to Mr. Hernandez. Several members of our security staff then proceeded to chase the suspects on foot all the way to 10th and Lacey. "

skybox wrote on Feb 25, 2009 8:27 PM:

" We do not take this type of problem lightly and we have ample security on staff. With this incident, there was no prior warning, no pushing and shoving, no confrontation, it just happened. The suspects had not been over served, in fact, they drank very little while in our establishment.

--cynic-- No they did not have any burgers while here. Although many others did enjoy our food offerings and the kitchen does stay open all night. As "D" wrote, we do have some of the best food in Hanford. Thank You for that "D".

--Time4Change-- I do believe that our security staff is adequate and our policies are sufficient. As soon as people start wearing signs that identify their intentions and future actions, we will be able to prevent this type of incident. And yes, the parking lot is a public lot. As we mentioned in the past, it would be great to have a uniformed officer in the parking lot around closing time. Out of his car, on foot, that is. Our response from the police department in the past is that they don't have the manpower. "

skybox wrote on Feb 25, 2009 8:56 PM:

" --bluefalcon559-- I agree, enough is enough. I'm referring to The Skybox name appearing negatively in print. Yes we have had incidents recently and in the past. However, during that same time frame, there have been assaults, stabbings, and other incidents at other bars in the Hanford, Armona, and Lemoore areas. How about the violent acts throughout Kings County in general? Take a look around... we are all feeling the effects of our economy and it creates tension throughout the whole community. This in no way excuses this type of action but it is, in my opinion, a contributing factor.
No, I will not accept fault or blame in this incident for the following reasons: The customers were not over-served, they caused no problems while in our establishment, or showed any signs that they would cause a problem, we had no indication or warning this was going to happen, and the individuals that perpetrated this act should be held accountable for their own actions. I am proud of the way my entire staff handled this incident. They acted swiftly, efficiently, and with professionalism. "

skybox wrote on Feb 25, 2009 9:28 PM:

" It is tough to clean up a negative image when the only thing that makes print is negative. We do many positive things throughout the community. We sponsor youth sports programs, we participate in fund raisers and local charity drives, I personally coach youth football and baseball. We host wedding banquets, squadron parties, business meetings, and various other events. We are currently working with the Hanford Visitor's Center to host their Asian Progressive Dinner. We do a lot that goes unnoticed. We don't do it for the exposure or recognition, we do it because we believe in helping the community that helps us to stay in business. I only mention these things to help balance opinions that are reached from reading this print. "

skybox wrote on Feb 25, 2009 9:32 PM:

" My staff and I are committed to providing the best possible experience for each person that walks through the door. If you haven't been to our establishment, please come and visit us before you make an opinion. There are always two sides to every story, and ours is one of dedication and the pursuit of excellence. Thank You to our patrons that come out to enjoy themselves and make this a great place.

Granted much of the violence that has taken place in the parking lot is not your fault. I'll give you that one, but the fact it has continued, the fact that it happens on a regular basis is enough to keep me and mine at a safe distance from your establishment, the parking lot and I think you can understand why.
My wife and I were sitting minding our own business and were assualted by hoods in another town by some young men who ended up explaining to their parents what they do for fun when they are out of their sight. Something tells me the young men will be reeled in somewhat, they were mouthy and awful brave until I dialed 911 on my cell phone and bragged how they didn't fear the police. Funny thing was the police showed up and it was a whole different story. Their demeanor changed, they said yes sir and no sir to the policemen and all of a sudden their manners surfaced. To those parents, better start watching those kids while you can. "
