Rural crash kills 1, leads to arrest of Avenal man

An Avenal man briefly hospitalized following a fatal car crash on Laurel and 18th avenues Thursday afternoon was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license.

Investigators said that Ismael Juarez, 34, drove through a stop sign while heading east on Laurel Avenue at more than 55 mph. His 1999 Dodge Caravan crashed into the side of a southbound Ford Taurus, sending both vehicles off the roadway into a field of alfalfa.

The right-front passenger of the Taurus, Phil Brown, 70, from Oceano, was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the severity of damage inflicted on the right side of the car, Kings County firefighters were forced to use the Jaws of Life to extract Brown's body from the wreckage.

Brown's wife, 71-year-old Annie Medina, was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. She was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment. Hospital officials said this morning that she was in fair condition, despite suffering major injuries in the wreck.

Highway patrol cars and emergency medical services personnel partially blocked 18th Avenue just south of Laurel Avenue as they attempted to get the victim to safety and clear the area. The Taurus left the roadway after impact and traveled more than 30 yards before coming to rest.

Debris littered the roadway where the vehicles collided and had to be swept away before the road could reopen. Among the discarded items were the minivan's license plate, a dairy breeders guide book and a small card depicting Jesus Christ carrying a cross.

Juarez was booked into the Kings County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Jail records indicate that he was released from the facility three hours after being brought in.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

" What the heck going on?

Is there some kind of sudden rash of people not stopping for those big red stop signs?

I am very sorry that this man was killed and his wife severely injured.

Once again I posit the question: is there anything else we can do that might prevent this from happening?

Or is the discussion closed?

Human error.

Nothing more we can do? "

" How sad. But how in the world does a guy run a stop sign and kill someone get released after three hours? If that would have been my wife that was killed I would hope the person would serve longer than three hours. He will proable leave the country for Mexico. "

" I guess all those late night bail bonds commercials paid off for the guy.

It would only take $1000 in cash or equity to bail this sucka out.

Still, three hours for a reckless homicide doesn't seem right...he could very well vanish.

Do we have any available bounty hunters in the area anyway?

Dawg, you listening? "

" Kings county IS overly immigrant saturated and known as a safe haven community, many resident and illegal aliens operate under the radar in severe violation of laws. They demonstrate indifference and malice disregarding countless U.S. laws. Many of these people are disregarded as criminals....but they DO COMMIT major felonies and they LIVE HERE WITHOUT FEAR of deportation.

Immigrant pandering trumps public safety. Law-abiding residents of gang-infested neighborhoods live with their hands tied....still waiting on enforceable immigration policies. We deal with law protection for shooters, drug dealers, vandals spraying of graffiti, and seeing parents with no control over their anchor children and then relying on them as interpreters.

We all know the local and state politician’s ARE IN FEAR of offending Hispanics.

So....shut-up and drive at your own risk! I mean, just live with it? But WHY? "

" Yes it is a sad affair when someone can do so much damage to so many people and literally be able to walk away. The kid that brushed the girl in the crosswalk will probably get more time, for after all he didn't kill anyone. I see other people book on other crimes with bonds of over 400,000 yet this one only got 10,000, and as stated only needed to give the bails bondsman 10%. I don't see how this person's bond wasn't closer to half a mil since he killed someone and obviously had no respect for anyone since he was speeding, driving without a license, failed to yeild to a stop sign, etc. Was the vehicle itself even registered? Did he have insurance? There isn't enough money to cover the death of a loved one. "
