Celibacy is important

Editor: Maria Elena Salinas, one of your syndicated columnists who regularly attacks the Catholic Church, wrote in her May 9 column that “sex between clergy and an adult woman is a far more serious offense than molesting minors,” according to church law.

In fact, the opposite is true. The very canon she cites allows for dismissal from the priestly state if a priest persists in a sexual relationship with a woman after being warned; for a priest molesting a minor, this dismissal can happen after only one offense.

Her statement that celibacy is “unnatural” is the reason why it is so important today. In a society dominated by sex, where even many Christians justify their sexual sins by saying that it’s not possible to live without sex, the witness of celibacy on the part of priests, nuns and many laypeople ” even if unreported by the media ” shows the presence of the grace of Christ in the world.

The Rev. Michael Moore

St. Brigid Church, Hanford

It doesn't do that for me reverend.

This is a huge one sided view that is not accurate. If molesting children is such a high priority for the church why were so many priest simply moved quietly from church to church when discovered? "

" Ms. Salinas is one of the most liberal secular journalists who does indeed attack the Church disproportionally and consistently.

Many thanks for your response, Father Michael! "

" Anyone with a knowledge of the English language need but listen one time to Ms Maria Elena Salinas, to understand she walks to the beat of her own drum. Her only concern, is that of her own self promotion as a journalist and the ability to spread her prejudices against mankind as well as the church, at every open opportunity available to her. She is a very unhappy lady with many convictions to try and make others as miserable as she is in her comments. I take her articles with a grain of salt, her biased surfaced long ago making her a non-read for me. She wishes to wallow in the squander of illegal immigrants and blame her religous upbringing for her horrible childhood. The worse part is when she uses the illegal immigrants as a tool to strike back at "the man", revealing how shallow her thoughts and abilities really are. I too want to thank Father Michael, for pointing out her shortcomings regarding her lack of respect for her own religion. Her lack of knowledge of canon law. "

Really because I've never heard of a priest being dismissed for having sex with a child, just moved to another church. The Catholic church has pretty much cornered the market on child abuse. "

That may be a tiny bit extreme, but there's no denying the church shifted priests in abuse cases instead of dealing with the problem. And when you take into account the Irish settlements regarding abuses from the 20's through the 80's, yeah - it looks really bad for the Catholic church.

If you're not familiar with the Irish settlements, you should look into it. Just Google "Irish orphanage" for a start, and read the Irish Voice newspaper article for a solid background.

Warning: Some of the stories will make you want to take a shower after reading. "

Really Ali, please show me what part of my statement was incorrect. Can you name a single organization that has systematically abused more children than the Catholic Church? "

WOW, I don't even know where to begin. I guess I'll start with the fact that pseudointelligencia is not a real word - in English or Spanish.

I hope the irony is not lost on others. "

" Celibacy for Priest is not part of church doctrine or dogma. Paul, one of our first priest, stated that an umarried man is better suited as a messenger of God since he does not have to worry about the everyday job of being husband and father.

And as far as sexual abuse in church, Alihandero: the FLDS pretty much ratched it up as doctrine and dogma when it came to marrying a 10 year old girl to a 49 year old man in Texas. And people like Mary Kay Letourneau did it at her job as a middle school teacher. And is now hosting "Hot For Teacher Nights" at a bar in her town. It's shocking that the Catholic church hasn't been sued for copyright infringement. "

Alihandero wrote on May 26, 2009 4:57 PM:

" @ “Ms. D”

Why do you blame the Catholic Church for women teachers having sex with their underage students? Or is it the FLDS you are identifying as the culprit?

And BTW: it wasn’t me that talked about corrupt CO’s on another Sentinel article topic – that was someone else you failed to call them on.

I do NOT believe that all CO’s are corrupt at all!

Thanks, “Ms. D.” "

I don't disagree with many of your examples you provided. However, and by the way my religion is not Catholic, but not that, that matters. I think you paint with too wide a brush on almost every topic you discuss. Every Priest in the Priesthood is not a molester, just like not every CO in the Prison system, isn't on the take. Those that are in both cases will be punished by a far higher authority than you and I in the end.

Secondly, how would you like it if I said in the article regarding smuggling that all CO's are guilty of it, they have the market cornered on it? Such broad and open statements are not fair to anyone. As is always the case, a few bad apples can spoil the entire batch of cider. But you don't throw out the entire production because you found it in one bottle, do you?

I for one think you owe this community and the Catholic Church in particular, your apologies. According to your thinking we should fire everyone including the Pope. "

" RE: Alihandero, I like to know where in my statement did I blame the Catholic Church. I didn't! I stated a fact about priest and I pointed out that there is sexual abusers in public schools(like Mary Kay Letourneau)and the FLDS in Texas. As usual, you and Watchdog Fred do not get it! "

Alihandero wrote on May 27, 2009 3:20 PM:

" Well, "Ms. D," as the knowledgable wife of a correctional officer, you know the legal determination of what ‘no proof' means, right?

You did in fact imply/link/otherwise besmirch the Catholic Church and "priest" [sic] with you comparison to the FLDS in Texas.

If there was child abuse in that FLDS case in Texas, then why oh why did the Texas Department of Child Protective Services release the children?

"In April, 2008, Texas Child Protective Services, acting on what would later turn out to be a questionable tip from a person alleging systematic child abuse on the FLDS Church's Texas compound, took custody of all 439 children under age 18 from the church's YFZ Ranch...On May 29, the Texas Supreme Court affirmed an appeals court ruling that Texas CPS was not justified ...and ordered the children to be returned to their parents."

"The tip that prompted the raid is now believed to be a false report, instigated by Rozita Swinton. Swinton was later to face criminal charged based upon this false report and is believed to have filed similar false reports in the past."

" Watchdog Fred, you're obviously not Catholic. But if you really want to know why priest aren't married(they are allowed to in Eastern Rites)make an appointment with any parish priest within Kings County and they will tell you. Or you can take the time out of your busy schedule and attend RCIA at any Catholic church and learn about Catholocism. It's all right to ask a question of a priest every now and then. That is how you learn. "
