One last time for all-stars
By Josh Butters jbutters@HanfordSentinel.com
Today's Tulare/Kings County All Star game will be both first and last chances to players from Kings County.
For those from Corcoran, it will be their first chance to take on players from bigger divisions.
It will also be a second chance to try and finish their high school careers with a victory.
Corcoran ran its record to 12-0, winning the East Sequoia League title and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
But the Panthers lost in the Central Section Division V championship game to Bakersfield Christian.
A win on Saturday at Mineral King Bowl in Visalia can help some of them end their high school football careers on a positive note.
Game time is 7 p.m.
"I want to finish my career with a a win after that loss," said Corcoran's Luis Gutierrez, who will play offensive guard.
Gutierrez is one of the players on the West roster that won't be playing football in college, making the game a swan song of sorts.
"I've been stoked about playing one last game," he said. "I just want to focus on my studies."
As for offensive tackle Faustino Aguilar, it's a chance to show that the players from the small schools like Corcoran could have competed with the schools with bigger enrollments like Visalia's El Diamante, the Division II champions.
"I want to show them what the small schools are about," Faustino said. "I'm going to hit them hard."
Corcoran head coach Rich Lane will lead the West roster, compiled of players from mostly Kings County.
He expects a good game. Most of all, the game will just one last chance for those that love the game to strap on the cleats and pads and mixing it up.
"I'm going to enjoy watching them play one more time," Lane said. "They got selected because of their God-given ability.
"They just love to play ball. They just want to go out and hit that guy on the other team one more time."
Corcoran receiver/cornerback Andrew Burke is also ready for the game.
"It's going to be a good experience," Burke said. "It should be fast and hard hitting. I'm looking forward to it."
Playing for Corcoran also include Richard Sahagun, Anthony Ramirez and Brant Botill.
From Hanford are Bryant Furtado, Tre Hudgins and D.J. Maciel.
Representing Lemoore are Darius Thompson, Jared Wilde and Noah Fagundes.
Vontrail Love of Hanford West and Thomas De la Cruz and Alex Leyva of Avenal also will play.
