Three arrested in early-morning robbery

A man beaten up, threatened at knifepoint and robbed of his wedding ring early Tuesday morning in Hanford received his property back less than an hour later, thanks to local police. Officers arrested three men on suspicion of the crime when they were found not far from the scene of the Lassen Drive and Florinda Street robbery.

Arrested was Arthur Lee Shepard, 42; Lapries Vinyon Harris, 28; and Aureliues Elfassia Vickers, 42; all Hanford residents.

The men were found lingering outside a home in the 1100 block of Florinda Street just one hour after the 12:40 a.m. robbery occurred, according to a Hanford police news release.

The victim, who was not named by police, was able to positively identify the three men as the suspects who robbed him.

A search of the Florinda Street home uncovered the missing wedding ring and a pocket knife that was taken from the victim, police said. Both items were returned to their owner.

Police Lt. George Hernandez said the suspects yelled gang slurs at the victim during the incident.

All three men were booked into the Kings County Jail on suspicion of robbery.

Vickers was also charged on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of a smoking device.

The Hanford Parole Office said Harris was out on parole at the time of his arrest for a previous incident of evading peace officers in a vehicle with "wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property."

Each man is being held on separate bail of $50,000 or more.

" Is $50k bail the going rate for felony assault and robbery with a gang enhancement these days? Isn't 42 a little too old to be playing gang? "

" To Junebug: Because it sell's papers and keeps
the public upset , which get the popo more money to combat the so called gang problem. I know a family here wheras the brothers sisters and
cousins are considered a gang , just because they
live in the same neighborhood. "

" Junebug ; do you really expect the police to be on every corner 24/7 ? Thats impossible ,the best way to keep things like this from happening is to keep people like these 3 knuckleheads off the streets . They obviously have no respect for their fellow citizens .they will probably be sent to prison where they will continue to be a drain on society . I wish I had the answer . "

" - The three individuals with rather unique names were found lingering at, or near, the scene of the crime?

- Didn't apparently hide very well the knife and wedding ring in their house?

- Yelled gang slurs and were ID'd by the victim

Duh, not very smart.

Wonder what Alan G. would say... "

" Good Job HPD Junebug did you read the artical, the suspects yelled gang slurs. im not an expert, but i would say that would be gang related. as for doing thierjob, it kind of looks like that is what they did. patrol will not stop criminals patrol is looking for crime or criminals and bringing them to justice, as was done. why is are so many bloggers so anti law enforcement. people like junebug just want to be negative. they arrested three for robbing a man of his wedding ring and got it back in an hour. that is good work "

" I grew up in this neighborhood. Lassen, was up until about 15 years ago a pretty good street... but those slum apartments house' many (not all) that should be in Kings County Jail... Hanford should clean those apartments out! Get rid of the drugs, riff raff and illegal population (again).

Junebug, the police only said that the suspects yelled gang slurs... did not mention they were in gangs. BUT... if you don't know this area of town, take a drive over there; you'll probably think that many are probably in a gang of some sort... possibly the victim as well... just a thought...

Hanford, if you want this stuff to stop in this part of town... clean those apartments out! "

Alan G wrote on Jul 17, 2009 10:09 AM:

" I agree with Blue Falcon. I also grew up near Lassen and Florinda and the "White Apartments" as we referred to them, were filled with thugs and criminals. We all knew to steer clear when riding our bikes because there were some seriously scary people in there. Raze those government subsidized apartments and you'll eliminate a significant percentage of crime in East Hanford. There are plenty of decent people in there too and i'm sure they're just as frightened of some of their neighbors. "

" Here is another example of three individuals that the dept of corr will now be responsible for. City of Hanfor dealt with them for 3-4 hours, now the county will house them for a short while then back to prison. Now correctional officers will be supervising these guys and 150,000 more just like them. Keep those guys out of our community, but don't complain about the cost when you get the bill. "

pschultz wrote on Jul 19, 2009 11:24 AM:

" A THUG IS A THUG IS A THUG!!!!! THESE IDIOTS ARE SO BUSY PREYING ON EACH OTHER, THAT INNOCENTS WHO JUST HAPPEN BY GET CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE....LOCK EM' UP THROW AWAY THE KEY!!!!! IF THEY MAKE BAIL THERE WILL BE MORE VICTIMS WITH OFFICIALS SPEWING THE SAME OLD MANTRA "HOW CAN WE STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN?" "

Bobb wrote on Jul 19, 2009 3:49 PM:

" Our prison system is totally messed up. The incarceration cost is way to high and the privileges too generous. I just read a news brief this Sunday morning about another inmate dying of natural causes on California's death row. That is the second one this month dying from natural causes. The death penalty in Ca. is definitely working----just taking a lifetime to be carried out. Now they want to build a new death row for billions of $ as the old one is full and inhumane. What happened to those victims is just circumstantial as they were just in the wrong place. Cry me a river for those on death row but they put themselves there. "

rocketman wrote on Jul 20, 2009 8:29 PM:

" Fortunately the suspects did not tell a different story than the victim as a bully and her friends did when she assaulted my granddaughter and the police said they could not do anything because the suspect said she did not do it. Another bully learns a good lesson in police tactics.
Great Job ! "

I LIVED IN THE GARDENS AND MY FAMILY LIVES IN THAT AREA SO YA I HAVE BEEN THERE AND I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE AND I SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT SIDE OF TOWN, IT IS JUST PEOPLE LIKE YOU GUYS WHO ARE LIVING THE HIGH LIFE AND LOOK DOWN ON THE LOWER CLASS PEOPLE AND ASSUME OTHER PEOPLE NOT YOU ARE BAD PEOPLE. HOLLA "
