One arrested, one sought in Monday crime spree

An Armona man was arrested and his brother is still at large following a brief crime spree in east Hanford on Monday. The Kings County Sheriff’s Office believes the two suspects, both alleged gang members, were involved in the strong-arm robbery of an elderly man and a vicious attack on two Home Garden residents in the early afternoon.

Robert Campos, 24, is being held on suspicion of robbery, assault, a parole violation and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The Hanford Parole Office said he was released in early 2007 on parole for a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

His brother, Lionel Campos, is still being sought by deputies.

Lionel Campos is described as 5-foot, 4-inches tall with black hair and brown eyes, weighing roughly 170 pounds. He also has two tattoos, one on the back of his head with the letters “WAS” and one on his right forearm with the letters “SUR.” Both tattoos are gang related, according to the Kings County Gang Task Force.

At 12:40 p.m., the two suspects approached an elderly man sitting in his car in the 8800 block of East Lacey Boulevard. Deputies say the victim was waiting for his family to return from the Monday Sale when the suspects “choked, beat and stabbed this man in the head with a screwdriver,” a news release said.

During the altercation, the victim’s wallet and cell phone were stolen.

Hanford police arrived in the area and started searching for the suspects within minutes of the assault. The victim suffered only minor injuries during the assault.

Ten minutes beforehand, suspects bearing a similar description attacked two Home Garden residents at the Stop N Shop Market in the 11600 block of 10th Avenue. The attackers used metal pipes, baseball bats and milk crates to assault the victims, the news release said.

The fight was provoked by a prior history among the different parties involving the alleged assault of a relative, the news release said.

Sheriff’s Cmdr. Dave Putnam said investigators were able to identify the suspects by running tattoo queries through the Hanford Parole Office. Video footage also captured images of the two men during the Stop N Shop Market assault, Putnam said.

In both cases, the suspects fled the area in a black 1997 Toyota Camry.

Robert Campos was arrested at a home in the 11400 block of Grant Street on Monday night at 10:25 p.m. The suspect vehicle was also found at the house. Putnam said they are waiting for a search warrant to clear before they investigate the car. They anticipate that the robbery victim’s property may be inside.

Anyone with information about these incidents or about the possible location of Lionel Campos is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 582-3211, ext. 2790.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2425.

" Excellent job KCSO.
On a separate note - wouldn't Robert Campos, the suspect on parole for a previous conviction of possession of controlled substance ( a non violent offense) fall under the governor's guidelines for the early release program. This shows you that even though someone is in custody for a non violent offense, it does not mean he or she does not have a propensity for violence. Releasing thousands of prisoners into our community will only increase crimes of this magnitude. "

" Apparently, the "WAS" tattoo on the back of Lionel's head stands for "WAS a free man". And perhaps "SUR" on his right forearm stands for "SURprised he got caught driving around his hometown despite being wanted by the police."

Kids, pay attention in school! "

" This is one of the reasons that when I moved to this county, I purchased on the outskirts of town. Before my move here I was told by several people that Kings County has an awesome Sheriff's Department and 99.9% of the time they get their man! Great Job to the men and women of the Kings County Sheriff's Department, and I feel very safe being a rural county resident! "

" Here is another example of two extremely dangerous criminals that we atta boy the sheriffs and then CDCR gets them, we complain about the bill to keep them incarcerated. You can rest assure that when they release 20,000 inmates in the the next year, we will have many more of these crimes. "

That would be true, but the parents have to care first and if they did then they would have probably raised their children to be prductive members of society instead of the scum they've become. "

" It sure seems like KCSO has some experienced deputies. I personally thank you guys/gals for what you do. You are under appreciated and wish you all the best, I have read about all the gang members you have been arresting so keep up the good work. Your experience and ability to fight crime is why I live in the County area. Just imagine how safe our community would be if more of you stuck around longer and didn't leave for higher paying agencies near by. "

" Once again here we go with hanford police accusing these two of beig gang members. Hanford police thing anybody with a tatoo or wearing certain brand name clothes are gang members. This is not true. "

knowyourfacts wrote on Aug 9, 2009 3:19 PM:

" kntrygl,
Tell me - what else would a tattoo of "SUR" stand for? Just look around town and a lot of the graffiti has "SUR" in it or some variation of it. How much do you know about gangs? If you knew anything you would know that "SUR" is an abbreviation of sorts for "Sureno." The "Surenos" are out of the prison gang La Eme, or Mexican Mafia. The Mexican Mafia was formed to protect Mexican inmates from other inmates, but in the process were treating northern (From north of Delano, CA) Mexican inmates poorly. The Nueatra Familia then formed to protect the northern inmates (nortenos) from the southern (south of Delano, CA) inmates (surenos).

I don't claim to be an expert in Hispanic prison gangs, or any opther for that matter, but this is what I've learned through my own research. If "SUR" isn't a gang-related tattoo, then I don't know what is. "
