Hoover wins second straight against Lemoore
By Josh Butters jbutters@HanfordSentinel.com
LEMOORE - The first fake punt by Hoover turned the tide in Lemoore's direction.
The second one put the nail in the Tigers' coffin.
Hoover started the fourth quarter with a 17-play, 90 yard drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock and the Patriots were able to leave Tiger Stadium with a 28-7 victory.
The Patriots converted on three first downs and a 50-yard pass on a fake punt to set up an Eric Kendricks touchdown that pushed a 13-7 lead to 21-7 with less than four minutes left in the game.
Hoover added a touchdown later after the Tigers failed a fourth down attempt on the drive after the ensuing kickoff.
Lemoore head coach Shaun Ball wasn't happy after the loss with the visiting coaching staff.
"If you have to win a game like that," he said. "Then something is wrong."
The two teams traded possessions in the first quarter before Hoover started the scoring in the second quarter.
The Patriots converted on fourth-and-two from the Tigers' four-yard line on a qb draw up the middle by Kendricks to make it 7-0.
Lemoore tied it in the third quarter.
The Patriots tried a fake punt deep in Hoover territory. But Kendricks, who split time as quarterback, running back, punter and receiver, was sacked behind the line.
That's when it looked like momentum was turning in favor of the Tigers.
Lemoore converted a fourth-and-four after a Patriots penalty to move the ball to the Hoover 20.
Two plays later, Darius Chandler scored on a run from six yards out to tie it at 7-7.
After losing yards on the first two plays of the next drive, Lemoore committed a pass interference on a deep ball down the left side that moved the chains.
Chris Zakar then scored on a 10 yard run later in the drive to make it 13-7 with 1:50 left in the third quarter after the extra point conversion was wide left.
The Tigers moved down the field on two long plays. With the ball on the Hoover 10, Lemoore's offense stalled, giving the ball back to Hoover as the third quarter ended.
That's when the Patriots marched down the field to stay in front for good.
"I thought at times we showed glimpses of being good," Ball said. "The same mistakes we were making in practice, we made in the game."
It was the third time the two teams have met in the past year and the second game in a row for the Tigers.
Hoover ended Lemoore's season in 2008 in the first round of the Central Section Division II playoffs with a 27-6 victory.
They also played early last season, also on Sept. 11, with Lemoore winning 7-2.
"We knew them pretty well coming in," Ball said. "They just outperformed us."
Lemoore quarterback Scott Loper was 13-of-23 for 185 yards with one interception.
Tanner Silveira caught three passes for 71 yards and Chandler rushed for seven yards on 11 carries with the Tigers' sole score.
Sam Raymond added 40 yards on the ground on seven carries for the Tigers.
Hoover's Tevin Ivey had 20 carries for 79 yards.
Lemoore won the junior varsity game 44-0.
