Going All-in: Tripping down Record Book Road

First thought that came to mind when ace sportswriter Josh Butters told me about Laton's Jose Perez accounting for seven touchdowns in Friday's 51-22 home win over Avenal was "That has to be some sort of record."

Alas, at least on the state level, it's not even close.

It also turns out 1929 was a terrible year to be a defensive coordinator in Southern California.

According to the CalHiSports.com state record book, Frank Greene of Coronado accounted for 11 touchdowns, all by running, in a 108-0 win over Sweetwater (National City) in 1929.

Next-highest total? 10, by Flagel (no first name listed) of Bell, also in 1929, in a 102-0 win over Torrance, among many others

Ten also appears to be the best-ever in the Central Valley, with Joe Silva of Gustine scoring nine times via the run and once on a pass in a 74-0 Redskins win over Le Grand in 1974.

So, with that trip down Memory Lane, or at least Record Book Road, out of the way, a few more thoughts hopefully worth dessert on a Tuesday afternoon/evening (we're still working on this line, folks) as we count down the minutes toward the new season of "South Park," premiering Wednesday on a Comedy Central near you:

l Yes, it's only the second week of West Yosemite League play, but it may very well be called "Survival Week" for Hanford, Hanford West and Lemoore in the league football race.

The Bullpups and Huskies both enter the week with 0-1 league marks. Hanford saw a fourth-quarter lead over Redwood slip away last Friday, while Lemoore's running game proved to be a bit too much for the Huskies in a loss to the Tigers.

It's the opposite side of the coin down Highway 198, where the Tigers host the Rangers, both with 1-0 league mark and looking to move up on the food chain.

WYL favorite El Diamante - Lemoore's opponent next week at Tiger Stadium - plays Paso Robles in a non-league tilt Friday.

l Some in the nation's anti-Obama party were quick to blame the president for Chicago's stunning defeat in the vote for the 2016 Olympics, but that seems like a knee-jerk reaction here.

Rio's a fine choice, don't get me wrong - one of the few cities where spectators may be less clothed than the athletes at the beach volleyball venue - but there is clearly some dysfunction in the relationship between the U.S. and the International Olympic Committee that must be dealt with and healed.

Perhaps the IOC is still miffed over the numerous debacles in Atlanta, or the bribery scandal surrounding the Salt Lake City games.

Whatever it is, it needs to be repaired. It seem somewhat silly for the U.S. to be denied the world's biggest sporting party over some of the petty reasons delegates came up with for the record after Friday's vote.

l On the other hand, with baseball out of the Olympics for now, meaning no games at Wrigley Field, why bother.

l Most ado about nothing this year in the NFL? The term "wildcat offense."

Unless you have no feel at all for football history, there's really nothing new here, just a variation on the box, the single wing and other run-oriented offenses that dominated the game before the invention of the T-formation, which eventually helped spawn the pro set, West Coast and spread offenses prevalent today.

So, until some team totally sells out to the wildcat - and so far the Miami Dolphins, who started this craze, have come the closest - let's stop treating it like some gift from the gods and instead see it for what it is, something out of the coach's bag of tricks, like a fake punt or a halfback option pass.

l And now, this public service announcement: The Cal football bandwagon will be unloading at all suburban stations before heading downtown.

If we learned anything from a day of college football on Saturday, it was an old lesson reinforced once again: Talking about wanting to be one of the big boys is one thing, doing it is another.

Plus, we've seen this act our of Berkeley before, most noticeably in the 2004 Holiday Bowl when, perhaps still smarting over being snubbed by the BCS, it put in a lackluster performance against what we now know to be an up-and-coming Texas Tech squad.

And if a late collapse, with the No. 1 ranking in the nation on the line two years ago, against Oregon State didn't set off alarms, the lopsided losses to Southern Cal and an Oregon team perhaps unfairly mislabeled after a loss to Boise State in the season opener should have.

Simply put, Cal needs wins over these Pac-10 powers to break into a BCS bowl. Otherwise, it's just another New Year's Eve in El Paso and San Diego, to rewrite Barry Manilow, instead of Pasadena.

l Meanwhile, is Stanford the best 4-1 team no one's talking about? They looked sharp against an improving UCLA team to be the Pac-10's surprise 3-0 team, but the true test may be in November, a four-week stretch of games against Oregon at home, vs. USC at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and against Cal and Notre Dame at home.
