Activists appeal decision on Kettleman landfill

A coalition of community groups opposing Waste Management's Kettleman Hills operation announced today that it will appeal Monday's Kings County Planning Commission decision to approve the company's controversial landfill expansion plan.

Waste Management plans to expand its existing hazardous waste landfill by 14 acres and build a new 64-acre landfill. The company says -- and the county Planning Commissioners agreed -- the project is important because Kettleman is one of only two sites in the state that accept hazardous waste and because the expansion will extend the life of the facility by more than 30 years.

The appeal asks the county Board of Supervisors to reject the permit issued to Waste Management for the project. The appeal alleges numerous defects and violations in the permit process. The groups claim that the Local Assessment Committee process was illegal, that the environmental health risk analysis was faulty and that the county failed to investigate the recent spike in birth defect and infant deaths in Kettleman City.

" this is just another reason that when you vote, if the word incombent is next to a name on your ballot you don't vote for that person. we need people to vote for what is good for us, and not for outside enterprizes. we live here, not them. "

" Revised Comment: This is turning out to be exactly as I said it would. Kings County approved this expansion way too quickly. I forsee law suits against the county in the future if they are not carefull. "

" Ah, see...the democratic process is still at work!

Wonder how much it will take to satisfy/pay off the outside agitator Green Acres this time?

Also: did you see how much money Waste Management is pouring into the community:

"Waste Management has agreed to pay up to $100,000 for a community health survey of Kettleman City residents, pay off a $552,300 debt owed by the Kettleman City Community Services District, donate $450,000 to the Reef-Sunset School District to build sports-related and other facilities, and help pay for a crossing at Highway 41."

Yeah, take that all away from 1,499 people, 320 households, and 289 families or so in Kettleman City, keeping the town small, poorer, and in squalor.

Smart move, folks; simply brilliant!

What next: a recommended roundabout at Hwy. 41?

(sorry to go all Glenn Beck on you again, folks) "
