Biz Beat: Empty car dealership hopes for revival, seeks new deal franchise

Drive past the former Liberty Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Hanford next to In-Shape City, and it looks like a ghost town.

There aren't any cars in the lot. The building seems deserted. It appears that the once-bustling car dealership is a fatal casualty of the economic meltdown and the bankruptcy of Chrysler.

Actually, there's still life in there -- one employee there working in the parts department. Most of the former employees have been moved to the Selma Auto Mall. The rest of the dealership has gone into hibernation mode as it waits for a new car manufacturer to pick it up.

"The plan, absolutely, is to stay in Hanford with a new deal franchise," said former general manager Rick Jacobs.

Jacobs is now the executive vice president of dealer operations for the Selma Auto Mall. Auto Mall owner Dwight Nelson still holds title to the Liberty building.

All the shop equipment is still there, waiting for a line of new cars to sell, repair and show, Jacobs said.

The dealership was angling for Honda to move in after it was shut down by bankrupt Chrysler this summer. In a special promotional deal, Jacobs got a line of Honda vehicles onto the lot for one week in August.

The Honda sale "didn't hit the goals we anticipated, but at the same time, none of the markets were hitting their targets," Jacobs said.

He said Honda's inventory was severely reduced because of the popular Cash for Clunkers program, so Liberty didn't get the volume of vehicles it was hoping for.

There is at least a theoretical possibility that Liberty could re-open as a Chrysler dealership. Chrysler's decision to shut down Liberty along with scores of other dealerships nationwide is being challenged in Congress, raising the possibility of re-instatement or re-imbursement for some of the money the dealers lost when they were terminated, Jacobs said.

The dealership would love to open as a Honda provider, but hasn't gotten any word from the popular car maker. Jacobs said the dealership is looking into other manufacturers, though he declined to name them.

Closing the dealership for good is not being considered as an option, he said.

"Yeah, it's in hibernation. We hope it wakes up soon," he said.

" Really wanna see a REAL ghost town?

Wait till Keller moves the whole Valley Ford franchise to his cool new location on the Cadillac Lane complex. You know, the location that was paved over when school official Ms. Presley decided to covertly replace Fort Roosevelt nature/learning center with a Keller parking lot?

Now THATS a great location for a roundabout, Caltrans!

Perhaps the city needs to pay for an outside consultant for the West side development this time.

It's only our hard-earned taxpayer dollars, right folks? "

" To Alihandrero,

Please check your facts next time you make a comment about property, just so you know Keller Motors is sitting on its own property, and the old Fort Roosevelt property is still school property if you want to come look, the school leveled it out and put in sprinkler system and planted grass for the kids to have more play area. next time get your facts straight before you speek, and also, good luck to Rick Jacobs I hope they do get a new car franchise we could use the jobs and the positive to automobile buss. in this area. " Really wanna see a REAL ghost town?

So, "nascarman," are you now telling us all on the record that Valley Ford will NOT BE RELOCATED to the Keller complex?

Since you have inside knowledge, could you let us know what will happen to the old Valley Ford complex?

Perhaps I am wrong and it will not become a vacant piece of unused urban blight like the old Wal*Mart store.

I sure hope I am! "

" to alihandero,

my comment was about the keller parking lot as you refered to and it is not on any school property that was the point, had nothing to do with the valley ford store, maybee check with who owns the property and see what they are planning on doing, first before you reference keller motors or the valley ford dealer ship. "

" wow i guess alihandero just CAN'T admit when he's wrong he turned nascar mans' correction into a confrontation about the relocation of the Valley Ford franchise....utterly ridiculous!!!!!! "

" If you carefully and slowly read my post, you know that my thesis is this:

Alihandero wrote on Nov 5, 2009 2:33 PM:
" Really wanna see a REAL ghost town?

Wait till Keller moves the whole Valley Ford franchise to his cool new location on the Cadillac Lane complex."

Perhaps I should have repeated what I said in a prior commentary to this to make myself clear:

Alihandero wrote on Jul 18, 2009 4:24 PM:
" Did you all read that Keller now wants to move Valley Ford to his other GM location on Cadillac Lane – you know, on the little-traveled dead-end street complex where the bulldozed Fort Roosevelt used to exist?"

So look at the old Roberts Chevrolet empty business complex abandoned for all these years...What will happen when Valley Ford is relocated to a different Keller-specified site?

Say what you will, but past business behaviors that produce urban blight are to be noticed and commented upon.

Specifically,

What will happen to the Valley Ford complex once Keller relocates the business?

Or do we simple repeat the Roberts Chevrolet, Dollar Movies, and old WalMart urban decay model? "

Carl.Spackler wrote on Nov 14, 2009 5:53 PM:

" Keller has owned that land a long time and it never involved any of the school property.

I don't think Ford will be moving any time soon. You won't find a lender anywhere who will make a loan on an auto dealership. "

Alihandero wrote on Nov 16, 2009 6:21 PM:

" To Carl.Spackler who said:

"I don't think Ford will be moving any time soon."

Thats OK as it only your guess and I was told otherwise by people in the know...it WILL BE MOVED but at a date known only to the Keller higher-ups.

But Carl, since you have the guts to answer, I will ask you this:

Why are YOU apparently satisfied with the vacancies comprised by the old Roberts lot complex, the old Wal*Mart, and the 'sometime in the future' Ford relocation?

Do you actually like these vast ghost businesses for some reason we can't fathom? "

Alihandero wrote on Nov 16, 2009 6:36 PM:

" BTW, use Google Maps to fine the still-active location of : "fort Roosevelt Hanford CA" and zoom in.

You will see the HUGE Keller parking lots on TWO SIDES of the old Fort Roosevelt dirt complex with 3 trees on a sliver of undeveloped land/dirt.

I remember that the entire Ft. Roosevelt Learning Center and museum was much bigger that that present satellite picture shows so forgive me if the Fort was much smaller in real life than is satellite mapped today.

I was under the impression that some of the land was sold or transferred to developers as reported in the newspaper long ago but Carl says that's not a fact.

I would rather believe what I know to be true and my past physical attendance at the Fort and museum.

If Keller did not buy or take possession of ANY school land then I am mistaken.

We have to live live with our losses no matter who is accountable, right? "

Carl.Spackler wrote on Nov 18, 2009 8:57 PM:

" Alihandero: Moving the Ford dealership may be in the plans but I can say with certainty that the plans have been pushed back a few years.

Of course I would like to see vacant buildings uses for other purposes but as we are in the worst retail recession I can ever recall, that might also take a while.

As to the other point about the Fort, I can also speak with some experience in this matter that the Fort Property was not part of the land Keller acquired. Maybe they picked up the land at a later date but I don't think so. "
