House passes health care bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.

A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.

"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.

Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.

The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.

Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price gouging, bid rigging and market allocation.

A cheer went up from the Democratic side of the House when the bill gained 218 votes, a majority. Moments later, Democrats counted down the final seconds of the voting period in unison, and and let loose an even louder roar when Pelosi grabbed the gavel and declared, "the bill is passed.'

From the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada issued a statement saying, "We realize the strong will for reform that exists, and we are energized that we stand closer than ever to reforming our broken health insurance system."

The bill drew the votes of 219 Democrats and Rep. Joseph Cao, a first-term Republican who holds an overwhelmingly Democratic seat in New Orleans. Opposed were 176 Republicans and 39 Democrats.

Nearly unanimous in their opposition, minority Republicans cataloged their objections across hours of debate on the 1,990-page, $1.2 trillion legislation.

"Our policy is to create a national health service in order to ensure that everybody in the country, irrespective of means, age, sex, or occupation, shall have equal opportunities to benefit from the best and most up-to-date medical and allied services available."
-CONSERVATVE Winston Churchill

Winston WAS a conservative in the truest form.

In a poll by Right Wing News, Winston WAS ranked the #1 conservative over Ronnie R, and rush wasn't even listed in the top 20. Sigh.

So, how is it that someone VOTED more "conservative" that ronnie PUSHED AND GOT universal health insurance for his country???

So remember, the next time republicans, conservatives and some “independents” use England’s pathetic health system as a socialized system used, tried and FAILED attempt at universal health care are really slapping Winston around.

Politicians never learn. 2010 will be an interesting election year...

Let's look at all of other social engineering projects Democrats have forced upon us:

Social Security- Yup, an efficient, penny-pinching, self-sustaining enterprise? *chokes*

Income taxes- We all love that, don't we?

Medicare- Penny-pinching and efficient? yeah... right *chuckle*

Medicaid- yeah, right...

War on Poverty- 40 years old and still going. And to think, Democrats complain that the War on Terror has lasted for almost 8 yrs...

War on Drugs- oh, yeah, we're winning that one, too, after spending Trillions on it...

While I agree it isn't the most perfect system in the world, it does provide health care for everyone. Doesn't

I've personally had broken bones, a quite serious head injury, dental work, et al, all treated without having to worry about deductables, if the doctor, hospital, specialist was in the network or any financial stress to add to whatever was going on medically at the time.

My father is currently being treated in the UK for prostate cancer. Diagnosed almost 3 years ago he's amazingly still alive thanks to Britains National Health Service (NHS) and doing well.

Father-in-law had a heart attack 5 years ago and ended up having a quadruple bypass. Wow, still alive today!

Mother-in-law has high cholesterol, cor blimey, she gets Lipitor to treat it! How can this be??

Stop listening to third hand stories that are part Chinese Whisper. The NHS isn't that bad. People do die there because of the system, but they die here too. "

Your use of the term "dual citizenship" is misleading. I will assume your misleading usage of the term is due to ignorance and not to malevolent intentions on your behalf. Churchill was an Honorary Citizen of the United States, an honor rightfully bestowed upon him two years before his death by Pres. Kennedy. Churchill did not receive US citizenship because his mother was American.

An Honorary Citzen of the US is not to be confused with citizenship. Read below (from Wikipedia):

"An Honorary Citizen of the United States does not appear to have the same rights as a regular US citizen. The Foreign Affairs Manual of the State Department states explicitly that honorary U.S. citizens are not eligible for U.S. passports. At present, it is unclear what rights honorary citizenship bestows to an individual, if any at all."

Yes John, very few people have read any history and ignorance does abound. Thanks for highlighting this problem with your comment. "

You raise good questions. Unfortunately I do not know the exact laws, which governed US citizenship status at the time of Churchill's birth. Perhaps there were certain laws in effect that prevented Churchill from becoming a dual citizen. We should consider the laws of the UK as well, as some countries didn't allow for dual citizenship. According to current US law, Churchill would have been able to claim US citizenship because of the fact that his mother was born in the US and met certain residency requirements. This law applies to you and your family's situation as well (I assume.). Unfortunately I do not know at what time current law went into effect. I do know, however, that all biographies of Churchill list him only as a citizen of the United Kingdom, and not as a citizen of the United States.

I doubt that the current debate regarding the citizenship status of children born to undocumented immigrants has anything to do with whether or not Churchill was a citizen of the US, but I understand what you are trying to ask. To answer you, I will direct you to our US Constitution, specifically to the 14th Amendment. "

" Boyce, the rubbish heard on KMJ is constant, particularly the BS that Canadian, UK health care systems are so loathed by the people of those nations for decades (if that were the case, then why don't their conservatives move to change it?). I'm sure you'll get your chance, and thanks again for speaking out here.

Any Canucks read the Sentinel?

The Republican party (are they still called Republicans or have they changed the name by now?) supports the status-quo of for-profit health care - that much is clear. If they wanted to fix it, then they would have presented a plan within their Contract With America back in the mid-ninties. They didn't and never had plans to do so. Indeed, our health insurance used to be non-profit until we allowed it to slide down the slippery slope to unfettered greed and corruption. We essentially have a legal Mafia running our health care industry, and it happened while Republicans had control of Congress during most of those twelve years. "

" Come on do Canadians even know the difference anymore? They are SO overtaxed already that they need free health care just to get healthcare. "
