KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii — Military personnel, family and friends gathered on Tuesday at Marines Corps Base Hawaii to honor the nine Marines — including Lance Cp. Alfonso Ochoa Jr. of Hanford — and one Navy corpsman killed in action during deployment this year in Afghanistan.

During the morning ceremony, Marines read Bible verses and “Amazing Grace” was played on bagpipes. The fallen were honored with a final roll call, a 21-gun salute and the somber echo of “Taps.”

Ochoa, a former Hanford West High School student who graduated early in 2007 to join the military, was killed by an improvised explosive device in the Farah province of Afghanistan on Oct. 10.

In addition to Ochoa, one other Californian was honored by the base — Downey resident Lance Cpl. Joshua R. Whittle, killed by a land mine on June 6 at the Helmand province in Afghanistan.
