Garbage truck oil leak upsets residents

What do you do when a leaking Hanford garbage truck leaves the streets of your neighborhood streaked with hydraulic oil stains?

That's what residents of the Stonecrest subdivision in north Hanford are wondering, after the truck made its rounds picking up trash on Wednesday morning.

On Glacier Way, Pepper Street, Cinnamon Avenue and many other streets, it left unsightly black stains of hydraulic oil. The stains are particularly noticeable because the newer neighborhood is known for clean streets and well-maintained yards.

Residents in the area aren't pleased.

"The city of Hanford should come down here and clean the streets. It doesn't look appealing," said John Quinonez, a corrections officer, as he stared at long black stains on the pavement in front of his Yale Way home.

A few doors down, Winky Javier looked at the marks in front of her house. Javier, also a corrections employee, said she hadn't noticed the stains until then because of her work schedule.

A few streets over on Madison Way, Corey Hoover wondered what could be done to remove the marks.

"I really hope they clean it up because it trashed the street. It looks gross," Hoover said.

The truck driver began his run at dawn and didn't even realize the garbage can lift arm was leaking, according to Lou Camara, Hanford public works director. The driver only became aware of the problem when the lift arm stopped working, Camara said.

"Obviously, we're going to repair the equipment," he said.

The streets department came out Wednesday to soak up any surface oil with sand, but the leaks had already stained the pavement, Camara said.

Camara said the city re-evaluated the situation on Thursday afternoon and concluded that a power washer would likely remove pavement, creating another problem.

The marks will fade over time, Camara said.

"Once it gets into the pavement, there's really not a whole lot we can do," he said.

The reporter can be reached at 583-2432.

" The only right & responsible thing to do here is for the City of Hanford to send a clean up crew to take care of the problem. That Stonecrest area is a wonderful, clean and family friendly subdivision which is in wonderful condition, it isn't that old and I love it there because of how nice & clean it is. We take proud of the little community that we have & now the City of Hanford needs to come and clean it up the right way, and not a half fast job either. We take pride in our neighborhood.!. "

" It's too bad that this didn't happen in a "newer neighborhood", then it wouldn't be such an issue. I'm wondering why this is "news"? "

" Same thing happened in Armona. The garbage truck leaked motor oil on the street in front of my home. I called the company direct and gave them the truck number. The maintenance manager said he would fix it right away. My neighborhood is not new like Stonecrest, but the people who live here care just as much. By the way, when they pave the streets, oil is used in the paving process. "

" Wow, this situation in Stonecrest is certainly worse than the genocide in Dafur. Next time you all should call 911 so that the City can send out a wambulance. "

" You can bet if it was a private company that did this, the City would be all over fining them and demanding they clean it up. They need to be no less vigilant with their own crews, and do the right thing. I don't know when they claim to have put sand down, but none was put on our street and it was one of the worst ones stained by this leak. Of course this is only slightly worse than the trail of garbage the careless operators usually leave trailing behind them, which they do on a weekly basis. "

" Seriously?????
I wish I had a life where this was my biggest problem. Get a real problem the stain will fade and I am sure other vehicles will leave spots, It is a ROAD!! "

" I'm sorry, but there are a lot of other streets in Hanford that need more attention than just a power washing. Get real people, spend the money on the repairs that are actually needed. "

" I would just like the city to clean up all the broken glass in the road that deflates and ruins our tires.

The City public works dept passes the clean-up buck to the fire department if they are called to the scene for fire or related injury and then the private ambulance gets called 'tootsweet.'

Who cleans up all the other non-MVA glass, metal, and plastic shreds and why exactly waste the expensive and high-value fireman's time with a mere janitorial cleanup chore anyway? "

" WHINE, WHINE, WHINE...aren't you all the same people who complained about trick or treaters as well as just about everything else concerning spending your hard earned tax dollars on frivolous expenses...yet you want them to spend money to clean up an oil spot on your street...it is after all a STREET that vehicles pass over daily!!!!! HOW LUDICRUIS!!!!! "

" Same thing happened in front of our house about 3 years ago. Right in front of the driveway. The city came out and put sand on the oil. It was a mess for a long time. The stains are still there. If you watch the way city employees drive the equipment, it`s no wonder the trucks are always having failure. "

Boyce wrote on Nov 29, 2009 1:15 AM:

" A power washer would remove pavement? That's a pretty good power washer or crappy pavement.

Hmmm. Have we spent too much on a good power washer or nopt enough on pavement.... "

Armonian wrote on Nov 30, 2009 10:57 PM:

" Why don't we use our tax dollars to actually repair our local city and county roads instead of worry about this discoloration? "
