No more horse play? Equines in parades on next City Council agenda

Lemoore City Councilman John Plourde wants to talk horses. Specifically, horses in local parades that kick cars and do their business on city streets, raising sanitation, safety and city liability issues.

Plourde has asked that a discussion on the topic be added to the Jan. 5 City Council meeting agenda.

Plourde said he wants to talk about safety and cleanliness after seeing problems caused by animals in the Christmas Parade this year.

A horse caused some damage to a vehicle at this year's parade. Two years ago a horse stepped on a child prior to the Christmas Parade.

Plourde said he would like to see horses isolated prior to the parade for safety reasons.

He also wants some sort of regulation regarding the cleaning up of manure by horse groups, or any other animal group, in the parade. He said he felt they should self-police their own groups so that other parade participants don't have to deal with the animals' leavings.

Members of the Kings County Sheriff's Posse have another take on the issue. Members said they may skip Lemoore parades if the new rules are put into effect.

"Being at the end of the parade is bad," said Greg Sanchez, one of the board of directors for the Posse. "The longer the horses wait the more anxious they get. We have own pooper scooper who travels the parade after us. We probably are not going to take part in it [Christmas Parade] if we are in the back of the parade."

The next scheduled Lemoore City Council meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 429 C St. Members may be reached at their Web site, www.lemoore.com or by calling 924-6700 for the city manager.

" I understand a good reporter's product answers the queesions: Who, What, Why, When and Where. Please ask Judy Finney, from the article printed above, what date the Lemoore City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 429 C Street (I suppose in Lemoore)? Personally, I would like to see the horses retained in the parades. "

" Why don't you ban diesels and gasoline engines too? They pollute and crash into people and cars too!

A better solution is for the horse entries to have a crew right behind the horses with shovels and absorbent.

A parade wouldn't be the same without them.

Life is dangerous. Get over it. If you try to eliminate risk, life becomes boring. You should ban air flights and vehicles around Lemoore. Ban hammers and saws, they cause injuries. Heck, ban child birth. People die during child birth!

I have a better idea, lets ban stupid decisions by city council members. "

" I find this funny, He is worried about liability of horses that are in a prade for one night a year. Yet the city does not have a paid fire department. Where is my fire tax money going. This is something he should be more concerned about. "

" From what I have heard a kid got his hand stepped on and the parents are suing the City of Lemoore and the Riverdale Rodeo Assn. The child was running around loose and ran behind a horse which was lined up for the parade. The horse backed up and the kid fell getting hi ]\s hand stepped on. He recovered fine but he was going to be the next Mozart and may have difficulties in the future, In come the lawyers and He and his family need millions to offset the loss of future revenues. Only in America. Of course the parents were absolved of any responsibility in controlling the child, that is the government and schools job. "

" Why don't they ban the stupid Christmas tree in the middle of the intersection on Main Street that is a huge hazard? They've got a nice, big park on Bush, and they should put it there.

Cars are supposed to circle to the right around the tree - even when turning left. Unfortunately, many drivers don't read the signs. Although I can't speak for a certain number of accidents because of the tree, there are several close calls per day when the tree is up. "

" getreal; it is referred to as a "mini roundabout" for the Holiday season. You need to start them out slow before installing bigger ones. "

My o my, Bobb, priceless!

I wish I said that first.

I tip my hat to you on this. "

" The damage a horse can do is far less than the health damage all those big trucks do to the little children's lungs along the parade root. Why not go entirely horse and horse drawn entries like the Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson which has the longest non-motorized parade in the world. "

Armonian wrote on Jan 1, 2010 12:19 AM:

" Lets tear down the 4 buildings on the corner and build a proper roundabout there and dig a bigger hole for the trunk of that ridiculously large tree. We can increase the speed to 45mph so people can get to where they are going quicker. Matter of a fact, lets have a private vote in council and rush it through(worked for Obama) and have a million dollar incentive to rush the project through so we can beat Corcoran and be the first in Kings County with a circular traffic jam! "

" Why doesnt the city of lemoore contract with the county fire dept. to provide fire services like the cities of Corcoran, Avenal and Armona. this way we would have a paid department. "
