Scrutiny is needed

Editor: As I read the letter to the editor about the state of the state printed in the weekend edition Dec. 19-20, I was thinking how true the letter is and the points it made.

To add to that it should start with our local government.

With the county making cutbacks, layoffs and no raises, there is one local government agency in Kings County that has no currency flow problem and is spending excessively.

In these hard economic times as I nod off I dream of a land of money and honey, where money flows freely and you don't have to worry.

It's a place where there is a negative in the cost of living you would still receive a raise, something like 5 percent to 10 percent. You would be able to take your employer's vehicle to run errands, pick up your lunch and possibly drive it home for the night, no matter how far you lived.

In my dream you would get 45 days of paid time off annually and still you ask for an additional three days, at your employer's expense of course, and you receive it.

You say this would be impossible because your employer would not have neverending cash flow. But wait, you are working for a local government agency. Your employer uses tax dollars, which are neverending.

Oh, what a great and glorious place this would be... Wait, I am dozing off at a meeting of a local government agency and for the employees this is not a dream but their reality every day.

" Hey Alvin,

And this "local government agency" is...?

(What do you think it is, Delbert?) "

" Hey Alvin, I'm looking to change careers and have dreamed of opportunities. Never ending cash flows, neverending tax money, just for me? Sounds like heaven on earth! Can you give me a hint on where to send my resume? "

" Alvin... have you ever thought of becoming a teacher?? "California requires 175 days of instruction" and you get paid for 365 days. That's 190 days off WITH pay.

Oh, and you can still ask for additional days off. And again with pay. "

" Actually, a teacher's pay contract is based on one year (an annual contract), they get paid for however many days they work in that year. If this sounds good to you, get an education and become a teacher. When you do nothing and criticize those who do work hard for a higher paying job, it makes you sound like a Lib. Work hard, pay your own way, become an Republican! "

" Wrong again Little paulie, it's an annual contract that is paid by the MONTH, not by how many days you work. "

So, in the summer months when I am a home, drinking a coke at 10 in the morning during the summer months of June, July and August or at Superior Dairy or Morro Bay,I'm supposed to be in the classroom????

And when my SCHOOL CHECK is deposited on the 1st of every month during the summer when I am looking for star fish at Morro Bay,

skippy, you mean, you aren't paying me for that???!!! I mean the hotel DOESN'T have ANY PROBLEM taking my non paid day pay AT ALL!!

WOW! As I "look at my hand" to see what I am supposed next.

(sorry, I just couldn't resist.) "

No, I was "blessed" as you call it by choosing a good career that I had to go to school for.

It was paid for by the "old GI BILL" for my time in service during the Vietnam Conflict.

I also have been "blessed" to have a decent brain that I got by listening to my teachers at Hanford High not Earl Johnson.

Everything I have is "real and legit" PAID FOR by blood, sweat and tears!!

Once again, can you say the same????

FUNNY, you keep NOT answering the "where you in the military question." THAT would answer a lot of questions for me.

Or are you going to be like "hanfordian" and blame it all on President Obama????

Straight face!!! "

Skip wrote on Feb 9, 2010 11:52 AM:

" paulie, you expect me to believe you went to Hanford High in the 60's and that you served in the military as well. I just can't believe someone your age that doesn't know about deferred compensation. In the mid 60's, a teacher by the name of Mr. Monte used to work at the packing shed in Armona during the summer months because he wasn't getting a monthly pay check as a teacher. Then, they came up with a way to defer their pay and get monthly pay, but still the same amount for the YEAR. "

Skippy... you can believe what you want. It's obvious that NOTHING can bring you back to the original point simply because sarah isn't looking at her hand to tell you what to say next.

ANY TEACHER can tell you that you can either have your pay paid out to you all during the school year or you can have it paid out EVENLY throughout the year in equal increments.

MOST want it in equal parts.

Alvin was saying that the gov't gives you 45 days of PAID TIME OFF.

I said that's nothing, teachers get more.

But your argument is based on a Mr. Monte, who was a teacher somewhere in the 60's. Fine.

This is 2010. I'll think of Mr. Monte and you as I travel, and eat danish in Slovang during my paid time off. "

" I'm glad you went to school Paul so you should be a little more respectful to others who have done the same thing and paid their own way through all of it. Apparently I'm not allowed to fully respond, but in brief I've worked at the Dept of Navy many years back, have degrees, and was not the right age for Vietnam but I do feel sorry that all those anti-Americans mis-treated you when you returned. I'm sure you are happy now that Obama is taking better care of veterens like you, or is he doing anything at all? "
