When a place has been part of a town's dining tradition for more than 100 years, there's usually a good reason why. It's no different with Hanford's "Star Restaurant," which has served up hot and tasty food in its Sixth Street location since the year 1900.
The Star is the kind of place you go when you're in the mood to take a trip back in time, to an era when you could walk into a casual dining establishment, take a seat at the counter or at a booth, and watch the action around you as you perused the local paper and made yourself at home. If you happened to be dining at The Star, you might even look out the window and watch the trains as they passed by on the old Southern Pacific tracks.
A good friend and I headed over to The Star the other day when we were in the mood for some good food and a comfortable place to sit and catch up with each other's busy lives. The Star was the perfect place.

Breakfast — it’s commonly known as the most important meal of the day. But a small group of volunteers in Visalia have given it some added importance.
On the second Sunday of each month, members of Visalia Elks Lodge 1298 prepare a breakfast spread that’s enjoyed by about 300 people.
“We net about $2,200, and it all goes to veterans,” said Chuck Lee, the lodge’s exalted ruler.

(ARA) - Kids need more than new notebooks and pencils to thrive at school. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine plays an important role in ensuring a successful school year, too.

Between running back and forth to soccer practice, dance class or after-work errands, sitting down for family dinners is quickly becoming a rarity. This fast-paced lifestyle makes it all too easy for kids to fall into unhealthy routines. After school, many kids grab junk food for a snack, and spend hours glued to the TV or video games. Therefore, it's important to help your kids make the right choices by giving them tools and options that are fun and entertaining, yet still healthy.
We all know the importance of having three well-balanced meals a day; however, it is equally important to extend the same healthy practices to snacking. Snacks should be viewed as a fourth meal for kids, as they account for a substantial percentage of your kid's daily energy and nutrient needs. Developing healthy snacking habits early may have more of an impact on your child's overall health than you realize.

(ARA) - In the diet craze that has captured our attention over the last four decades, the one plan that stands out from the rest is the Mediterranean Diet. Since the Mediterranean embraces more than 20 countries, each with its own cuisine, the diet is really a fusion of the many foods consumed by the nations bordering the sea.
(ARA) - Failed New Year's resolutions are a dime a dozen. That promise to go to the gym every day dwindles to three days a week, then two days a week, before falling into "whenever I can make it" territory. Diet and weight loss resolutions are among the most common, year after year, which says a lot about what kind of results people are getting from the promises they make to themselves.
(ARA) - Parents can spend a small fortune to celebrate their little one's big day, but taking a more original -- and less costly -- approach can result in even more success.
(ARA) - The upcoming holidays will not turn out the way Stephanie Andrews initially planned. The tight economy is forcing her to cancel her vacation to a sunny destination. But she's really not that disappointed. That's because Andrews is going to stay home and go all out decking the halls to create memories that she believes will end up being far more meaningful.
(ARA) - If the holiday meal is at your house this year, you could completely stress out over the menu and ingredients, spending hours and plenty of money in an attempt to feed everyone the perfect holiday meal. Or, you could plan ahead, save a few dollars here and there, and enjoy the holiday.
(ARA) - It's now in plain view on the calendar: the holiday season - time to prepare for feasts, families and friends.
